Original monitor in candy-mame unit blowed up. Little help?
« on: September 10, 2004, 11:07:08 am »
I have a converted neo-candy unit running mame-wah using windows 98.  For whatever reason, a week ago, a power surge took out my monitor.  It is a 27" Korean-make LG arcade monitor, which receives power from it's own step-down convertor.  A fuse blew in the convertor, which i replaced...  the monitor board also has two fuses, neither of which blew.

I metered the board and discovered it still receives power from the step down convertor.  The monitor itself receives no power, gives off zero static when plugged in, and no longer glows orange in the back.  I'm hopeful, but uncertain, that the monitor itself is still ok and the problem is with the board itself.

Right now I have a few choices to remedy the situation.  I was curious which choice would be better, and if there is anything else you all could suggest.

[A] Discharge the monitor, and send the board in for repair somewhere.  The monitor is mounted quite snuggly into a custom wooden frame, I imagine it would take some degree of hassle to manipulate the frame to accomodate a brand new relacement (either WG 9200 or betson imperial).  Does anybody here know of a reputable shop that could repair this?  Also, what would the expected cost be (generally speaking).

Replace everything with the WG 9200.  Aside from possible mounting problems, this is appealing to me because i was unable to run XP (and daphne) on my old monitor since, from what i understand, XP is 800X600 native.  However I AM concerned because the 800X600 is not offically supported by the WG 9200 and i certainly don't want another dead monitor.  How exactly does everybody here run windows XP with an arcade monitor?  Or don't they?

[C] Replace everything with the Betson imperial 27".  The positive side is it officially supports 800X600.  The negative is aside from the retroblast review not much is known about it.

I'm sorry if I am asking several questions at the same time...  It's been making me crazy walking by the dead unit this past week... and it's about time I quit whining to myself and take action on this. Thank you, in advance, to any replies or suggestions anybody may have.  This board has been an invaluable source of knowledge to me.

Anyway you could take a pic of the chassis?

I've just brought a 27" in a Neo Candy 29 cab back to life.

(I just replaced all the caps in the power supply section on the chassis)

Also, you mentioned wood.. I though all candy cabs were metal and plastic.
