ArcadeVGA 7000 and WG D9200 27" HELP
« on: September 09, 2004, 10:53:17 pm »
Ok, I just acquired an ArcadeVGA 7000 series to couple with my already installed WG D9200.  I got it all installed and displaying video win WinXP now.  By default, it set the refresh rate at 200Hz when I have the resolution set at 800x600 32bit!  I manually set that down to 47Hz interlaced (I found this to be the only refresh rate which didn't flicker, does this seem right?).  Ok so that much works.  Now when I open up MameWah which is also set to 800x600 layout, my screen shrinks at top and bottom cutting off both the top and bottom.  I load a game, and the game results in the same sections being cut off?  I haven't run the AVRes program yet, but still shouldn't MameWah work in 800x600 like it did previously??  I hear my screen "flick" when I load MameWah as if it is loading another resolution?  Any help would be appriciated!

I have also got major flicker with MameWah.  Its like it is running at refresh rate too high or something??  Anyone,??

UPDATE:  I loaded a few games that looked messed up and adjusted my monitor to make them fit the screen.  Some worked, but others like Tempest for example still cut the bottom off.  If i move the screen up, it just moves the same picture up with the bottom cut off??  Also is there a way to force the refresh rate in MameWah?  It has to be at 200 because its flickering pretty badly.  Thanks in advance!

Can't anyone help.  Surely someone else here uses the arcadevga and the WG D9200??  I feel like I am missing something.  Surely there is a way to tell mamewah to function at the same res settings as windows (800x600 47hz).  I really want to get playing this weekend, but this little problem is really hindering me.  Again, all help is GREATLY appriciated!

Does it function properly at 640x480?  When I had my D9200 working with an ArcadeVGA, that's the resolution I used in MAMEWAH.  I also had Windows 2000 running at the same resolution.

The monitor does click when a game starts - I've always assumed that is the monitor adjusting for the different frequency.

I havent tried it at 640x480 because I really didnt like how big the fonts looked.  Surely there has to be a way to run it with this card?  I mean it worked fine with my old Radeon card and its not even close to as good as the ArcadeVGA is, right?

the WG D9200 doesn't officially support 800x600 and won't do it at 60hz.  I would try it out at 640x480 and see if you have the same problem because your monitor isn't really designed to keep up with normal refresh rates.  If it turns out that the resolution is not the problem, someone might be able to troubleshoot a little further.  It is always a good idea when rooting out a problem to drop your settings down to minimum and then go from there.  Keep in mind, when you are running equipment out of spec, there is never a guarantee that it will work.

Well i dropped down to 640X480 and none of the refresh rates look good.  They all show flicker from 60hz all they way to the default 200hz (why the heck is this the default?!).  I am not sure what to do at this point.  I know my Radeon VE worked great at 60hz on both 800x600 and 640x480, so I am not sure what is going on??

UPDATE:  I switch back to 800x600 at 47hz and then looked in the mamewah cfg files for the layouts.  I noticed the top line specified the resolutoin, and at the end was the number 60 which I took a chance to mean 60hz.  I switched this number to 47, and voila! MameWah now looks great!  Now my major concern is that something is funky with my ArcadeVGA card or D9200 since none of the refresh rates look good in winxp at 640X480.  Can anyone here with the same setup confirm a good refresh rate for that resolution??  Thanks.

Maybe this is irrelevant but did you install the special 9200 driver from Ultimarc? Also, have you tried posting in the Ultimarc forums? There may be more people with this configuration there. Just a thought.  :)

Hrmm...wasn't aware of the 9200 driver.  I will go and check it out.  I have also emailed Andy and will post at the other forums as well.  As of right now I am happy with the setup for Windows and Mame, but its still a little screwy with PC games like Links and Golden Tee because it defaults back to 200hz.

Here's the description of the Wells Gardner driver from Ultimarc's site:

Wells-Gardner D9200 utility.
This overrides the  built-in ArcadeVGA video modes for 640X480 and upwards. This allows the D9200  to display a 31Khz non-interlaced picture at these resolutions. For all Windows  versions.

http://www.ultimarc.com/download.html

Sounds like that may do the trick.  :)

Odd problem I must say.  It really should be able to display 640x480 at 60hz.  You are using the ultimarc ati drivers not generic ones right?
