What OS should i use?
« on: September 09, 2004, 04:50:02 pm »
Ok on Windows XP I dont think you can play older pc games, but on windows 98 se the act labs gun wont work with terminator 2 or revolution X, Everyone tells me Windows ME is crap, and I dont want Windows 95. does anyone know a good windows  OS to use where everything will work ok? Do you think if something says it wont support windows 98 se that i would support normal  windows 98?

what older pc games are you trying to run?  XP has a compatibility mode that may or may not work..

I would avoid ME at all costs.  I would try XP's compatibility mode to see how the games run (if they run).  I've had some luck with the compatibility modes, but it's not perfect.

Right click the game's icon > Properties > Compatibility tab > choose OS

If that doesn't turn out so great, I'd go with 98 so you can play those games that you seem so interested in, unless those few light gun games REALLY matter to you as well.

House of the Dead 2 runs fine on my XP rig.
I don't think I even enabled the compatibility mode to get it running.

ME, through my research, is the only OS that can do everything i want it to do. is it really that bad if it will only be used for mame and pc games in a cab?

Ok, heres what i have concluded from my research...

The older games may not work on XP because it is not dos based, i believe.

Revolution X will not work with my lightgun in 98 SE or 2000.

Terminator 2 will not work with my lightgun in 98 se.

This pretty much leaves ME.... which apparently will work for everything.

ME is not dos based either.  i am fairly sure anything dos based (or not, for that matter) runs poorly in ME.

XP is the obvious answer.  what dos games are you using?  people have indicated that most of the games in your list work well in XP.  if it doesnt run in XP, why not have a dual boot for 98se?  if not, there are ways to get DOS games to work on XP..

you might in theory be able to do everything you want with ME, but you won't be all too happy when it BSOD's every 10 minutes.  It doesn't matter how many games you might be able to play through ME, you won't be playing any when it crashes all the time.

ill have copies of 98 SE and XP, First Ill run Xp, and if the pc games are fine on that, then ill be ok. I was just told by someone that  windows XP is different then all other versions so all the older games made for the older windows dont work on XP.

I guess we'll see... :) another issue with the lightgun is you have to run mame32, you cant have dos based mame and a frontend   :'(

I don't see why you can't use the light gun with dos mame... its the same program...

In fact, I'm pretty sure there is a MameWah skin for light gun games and it has a pic of the act labs gun.... I have to believe it works.

Well heres 2 things my instructions say, i got the gun in the mail today...

Quotes in the FAQ..

Will the gun work in shooting games in the mame emulator?
Yes, Provided that you are running the Windows version of MAME (MAME32).

Will the gun work in Dos?

No, the gun requires directX, which is a windows component, Dos is not supported.

Hope those help  :)

There's a big difference between dos mame, and command line mame.  There is a windows command line mame, that works with frontends.  Then there is mame32 which is windows mame with a frontend and stuff.  Then there is dos mame.  Windows mame is not Mame32, and command line doesn't always mean dos.

Correction though, the directions specificaly say MAME32 though, like thats the only one, if they meant commandline you would think theyd put it, i dont know though , you probably know more than me, i dont know whyd theyd specifiaclly say mame32 though. ;D

Sorry, didn't mean to quote you specifically.  It was almost just a general, hey guys,  be careful.  Because it appeared windows mame and mame32 were being confused.

I have never heard of ANYTHING software, hardware, ANYTHING that works on ME and doesn't work on 98.

Whatever you have that isn't working on 98 but works on ME is the result of a configuration issue, or a driver issue.

ME has the smallest install base of any version of windows, there are more Windows 95 installs out there then ME.

No one targeted ME with their hardware or software, they all knew it was a bad joke. Whenever someone brings me a Windows ME computer to work on I always "upgrade" them to Windows 98SE, and they always thank me for it.

Me is still dos based, they just hid it better.

I'm using XP, MAMEWAH, and switch between commandline MAME and Analog+ MAME (which I set up as separate emulators on MAMEWAH.
I think they made the mame32 reccomendation so that they wouldn't get flooded with "how do I get this thing to work with that thing?" support requests.
Mame32 is basically commandline mame with a built-in front end on it.

Why even ask the question if you arent taking anyones advice?

ME = CRAP CRAP CRAP GARBAGE CRAP GARBAGE (do you need me to put it on a giant PSD banner?)

And of course Lightguns work with Windows MAME.  Not only Mame32.  They just dont work with DOS mame.  Ive emailed ActLabs about it and they said for sure it works with Windows CLI MAME

Theres nothing that wont run in XP except probably some VERY old DOS games.  And all those games suck ass anyways so who cares

Craig's 2 cents =

Windows 98SE lite "Sleek version"

Using the Windows 98se and Windows 95A CDs and "98lite" demo from www.litepc.com you can create a lite version of Windows 98 that uses the super fast Windows 95 explorer.

98lite also allows you to remove many rescource stealing Windows features that you do not need on a cab.

It's very simple to do.

It's so fast it rocks

and it's free if you have 98SE and a 95A CDs laying around, and if you don't you can get them from your local computer shop for $5 or less.

and, as you know, Windows 9X can run MAME32, Windows command line MAME and just about every frontend on Earth.

(and DirectX for your PC games)

Groovy?
Craig

p.s. If any of you want to try this and have the 98SE CD but not the 95A files, e-mail me and I'll sort you out :)

98se lasted a month and I just torned it off becouse It finally got on my nerves (burning up elect.)

also I had many cds that would not play on windows ME
but strange enough thay work on xp ??? I never under stood why but I am glad of it.

I went 98se for my 8yr old daughters games

Because at the time they wrote the instructions, there were only MAME32 and command-line (DOS) mame, and they never updated the instructions when the command-line version became windows based.

BTW, I didn't reply earlier about ME b/c I was just going by everyone else saying it sucked, but as I expected, that has been well documented now.

Hmmmn, it's well-known that XP is more stable, you started the thread saying that the guns won't work in some games in 98 SE.  Of the four games you questioned, on three of them, people replied that XP was fine for them, but you are going to go with 98 SE.

Okay.

Sorry Im not a huge Arcade-Computer obsessed guy, I just want an arcade, and almost done, and have a few questions, then no one will have to worry bout me anymore. I just dont know why anyone cant just answer a question here, they always gotta be rude.
