How accurate?
« on: September 07, 2004, 02:36:08 am »
I am recreating the Ms. Pacman artwork in Illustrator.  I have already posted artwork of two characters to the Arcade Art Library.  The files are located here:

Ms.Pacman http://www.localarcade.com/arcade_art/details.php?image_id=413
Blue Ghost http://www.localarcade.com/arcade_art/details.php?image_id=414

When I study the original artwork on the Ms. Pacman cabinet, I notice that art is repeated but is very slightly different.  For example, there are three Ms. Pacman characters on the control panel, one for starting a one player game, and two more for starting a two player game.  There are also three blue ghosts on the Ms. Pacman side art.  All of these characters are different from each other.  ::)

In addition, when I study the Ms. Pacman Marquee, there are several circles inside of each other.  These circles are slightly misaligned in the original artwork; the perfectionist in me is screaming to fix it.  ;)

My question is this: when submitting artwork to the Arcade Art Library, how accurate should it be?  I'm kind of in a hurry to finish the artwork for a personal project; I would be happy to duplicate one of the characters in three places to save time even though it's not completely accurate.  Is artwork of this nature worth submitting?

You mean reapeating the same Ms. Pac 3 different times on a CPO reproduction even though she's different as you say?

Bad.  Unacceptable.  Do it right, or don't do it.   IMO.

If you can't be a good example at least try to be a horrible reminder.

Do what makes you happy wrt your own cabinet.

When you share the artwork, include a readme explaining that there are differences.

Don't submit art that is done in a hurry. I always take the time to reproduce the errors in my source files, it give the art its character. If I find later, that my source files were wrong, I will do it over.

When artwork is submitted, that doesn't stack up, I have a habit of replacing work at the library with better work, or removing it if it is subpar.

I have been working on the Ms. Pac Man trace myself (as noted in the vector W.I.P.) but I will happily let someone else do the work... as long as it's done in the attempt to reproduce the original, rather than imrove or correct. Unfortunately, none of the stuff we do will ever be perfect, but that is what I strive for every time I go to work on stuff that I submit to the library. (perfect to the original, that is. )

Thank you all for your comments.

I will reproduce any artwork as accurate I can (including original mistakes), then I will leave portions of the artwork unfinished for others who want to complete it.  I have no problems with what others do with my work as long as it may help someone else.

I wish I had the time to fully complete and perfect all of the Ms. Pacman artwork, but this is for a Halloween costume and there are time contrainsts.  ;)
