Question for Mods - Ipod threads
« on: September 01, 2004, 11:53:14 am »
I was just reading the "Before you post" message on the "Buy/Sell/Trade" forum.

http://www.arcadecontrols.org/yabbse/index.php?board=2;action=display;threadid=6106

And it says "No spam -- Multi level marketing schemes (pyramid schemes), scams, etc..."

If that is the case, then why are you allowing people to post messages about getting free IPODS, TV and others??  As all this is a pyramid sceheme for emails.

Regardless, I'm glad you put all the Free Stuff as a sticky and anyone who posts on any board should have there post moved to the Sticky.

Maybe you should create a similar Stickly for all Election posts...

I've been kind of wondering that too. Maybe saint hasn't seen it, and will reject those when he does?

I guess they are getting paid off in Free IPODS or TV's.

Saint actually posted on my original Free 27inch TV thread.  So he's aware of them at the least.

Planeyjay(one of the admins) was actually participating in the conga line for awhile, but he has sense completed his necessary referrals to get his iPod.

So it looks like the mods don't mind that much, but like always, they're free to remove the postings at their discretion.  As long as we dont really go spamming the board and keep it in one thread though, I dont think its that much of a problem.

1. A pyramid scheme is not allowed because they are nothing but attempts to rip someone off. This issue isn't as clear so I've left it for now.
2. I'm watching these threads carefully, and if the free products don't materialize all the threads go.
3. They need to not get too spammy

Ok, I just think all Free whatever threats should be posted in the Sticky on the top of the page.

Agreed. It wouldn't hurt at all of people just stuck to the sticky ( :P ).
Maybe Saint could put a notice in the Everyting Else description at the top of the page warning people to keep all FeeIPod/TV/PC posts in the sticky thread.

Please send me money

Okay here's the deal. I'm a SWM making a measily 60k/year (before Uncle Sam takes his cut). My property taxes just increased, and also I woke up today to find my Harley's front tire is flat. I do have money to cover the tax increase and replace/fix the tire.... but with all the recent FreeIpod posts I thought I'd take a shot  ::)

This is not a pyramid scheme! No one will ever send you any money. If they offer to, please let them know that is illegal, and they should send the money to me instead.

I've noticed on every other forum I'm on, they delete the free**** posts almost immediately. They even post warnings, that pyramid scheme or not, violators will be banned. I guess its a matter of how far-off topic your willing to let your board go. Even sites like fatwallet don't permit referal links.
Mucal invader, is there no end to your oozing?!

Yep, this is generally true.  There are actually a number of message board systems that are hard coded so the default forum rules say that no referral links/offers can be posted.  This is typically in there because most of the referral programs never pay off, are too difficult, resulting in a ton of spam across the board, or simply are scams.

Floyd10 suggested a seperate forum for things like this, but I think thats taking it too far.  Right now we're just using that one sticky(aside from a few individual threads like this, which keep being bumped to the top unfortunately).  I dont see a problem with a single sticky being used.  And after awhile that sticky will be taken down anyways, its not going to be around forever.

A lot of BYOAC members don't seem to like these posts...but I still don't understand why.  The majority of posters are only discussing this in the sticky, and I haven't heard of anyone harrassing other board members for referrals.  At this point I would think everyone would have read the sticky at least once, and from here on out could simply ignore it if they aren't interested.

Anyone can of course reply to what I just mentioned, but I personally would love to see these individual threads stopped being bumped.  We just need the one single sticky thread for discussion, not a lot of little ones like this.  So if we could just let this one slip down a page or two and die, I think it would make a lot of board members happy :)

I responded to a thread promising to pay $8 for completing his referral, and I got NOTHING. So, I think those types of links should be removed since the posters aren't paying up.  >:(

I believe the point is this... it will always get out of hand. Someone sees one or two posts.... than they start posting their own and so on. Kind of like a pyramid  ::)

These post don't contibute to the community, they are about taking. The board does not benefeit from the referals. It is unsoliciitaded ads... yes, just like SPAM. If the mods don't strike them down quickly... we'll just see it spread into other unrelated, unwanted ads. Its like speeding, its easier to get away with when everyone else is doing it ;)  I never drive 95mph... unless someone else is going 85mph  8)

If the mods don't strike them down quickly...

One of the Mods actually participated and should be getting his iPod soon :)  I dont think they're really worried about the thread.  But like I've always said, they're free to remove the posts whenever they want.

And Magnet_Eye, what happened to you is messed up.  I posted a reply in that thread saying you should be paid.  If it helps, I did remove that person from the conga line and  I will not be placing them back until you are paid.  I know it doesn't really make up for the cash you were promised, but hopefully it will be enough to motivate the person who made the offer to pay you.  But I am sorry if you don't end up getting paid in the end.
