Wow, I just can't let something like this go by again without responding with another perspective. Caveat: Dad was a career army man, I was raised an army brat, almost went into the service but the RIF made that a bad idea, and have nothing but respect and admiration for anyone who is willing to put his life on the line to defend mine.
However:
It is the pen that inspires the soldier to take up arms. It was men with pen, parchment, and words who declared we should be a free country. Would we have fought the War of Independance without the Declaration of Independance?
It is the press who we trust to watchdog government and those we place in charge. It was reporters who broke the news of Watergate that lead the the resignation of a president, not soldiers. It is reporters who raised questions about President Clinton's conduct and WhiteWater, not soldiers.
It is the soldier, the reporter, the police officer, and the lawyer (and forgive me if I've missed someone) who protect the liberties we enjoy in this country. None are asked to give as much as the soldier, and everyone should be proud and grateful that we have citizens who are willing to take up arms and risk life and limb to defend the common good, but all those who protect our liberties are necessary.
It is the very liberties that Michael Moore is being condemned for exercising that the soldier places his life on the line for.
"I may not agree with what you say, but I'll defend to death your right to say it."
There are most certainly soldiers who disagree with what Michael Moore's opinion is, but I would hope they would understand and believe that the minority and unpopular opinions need protecting as much as any other opinion, if not more so.
I find anyone burning an American flag extremely distasteful -- I love my country -- but it scares me to death to think my government wants to forbid anyone from doing so.
So thank you to those who put their life on the line for me, and protect my right (as guaranteed by the Constitution and the principles under which this country was founded) to speak my opinion and beliefs no matter how popular or unpopular.

"It is the soldier, not the reporter who has given us the freedom of the press.
"It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us the freedom of speech.
"It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who gives us the freedom to demonstrate.
"It is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves beneath the flag, and whose coffin is draped by the flag, who allows the protester to burn the flag."
There are many soldiers who'd turn over in their graves if they knew they gave their lives so that Moore could kick dirt on the America they fought for.
