Which one is right: x224 or 240 ?
« on: August 30, 2004, 12:56:40 am »
Well, I would like to play SNES and Genesis/MegaDrive emulators, at the original and real resolution, on my NTSC TV.

The problem is that I don't know which one would be the correct vertical resolution to use: x224 or x240 ? Since there is a lot emulators, like KGEN, that use 320x240 by default, so I'm really starting to wonder about it...

x224 would still be fullscreen or some borders are necessary ?

Thanks.

I should really reply... because I am remembering / guessing from conversations years ago (don't keep up with console emualtion)... but...

I thought that many old games added a border around them because some old TV's had some percentage that you couldn't actually see... But the others could be adjusted.

but after all that... they all had the same 3x4 ratio...

So I think the smaller number is actually right on older consoles... and the new consoles assume that all pixels are shown.

am I right?  ???

The mega drive and snes used similar resolutions but they are slightly different generally and can also differ between games...most games of that day were low-res non-interlaced but some were high-res in parts such as Secret Of Mana.Newer consoles such as the xbox scale everything to pal or ntsc resolution, but also to several progressive resolutions in the xbox's case. The dreamcast arguably uses scaling in a similar way but I haven't heard anything conclusive on that and the ps2 uses both high and low res without scaling from what I have heard ( psx backwards compatability looks terrible however for a completely different reason though) I'd like to know what the exact resolutions are for each consoles or just a simpleway it can be checked so it can even be done on a game by game basis, probably some rom tools can do it but I have not looked into it.

Oh and generaly lilwolf, that black border was a case of bad ntsc to pal conversion as PAL uses a higher resolution then NTSC so instead of adding the extra detail they just slap borders on the top,and generally don't convert the framerate to correct speeds leaving the game slower then the ntsc counterpart.
