The Cocktail Reloaded
« on: August 29, 2004, 06:49:59 pm »
I started this project a couple of years ago, long before I started posting on BYOAC and I've completed 2 more cocktail cabinets in the mean time. It was coming along very nicely; was originally planned to fit in with the furniture we had in our old apartment and be low enough to act as a coffee table. Then I got busy with other projects and the 75% finished cocktail spent a little too long in our basement collecting dust and it's wood (pine) got pretty warped from damp winters.

Now, spurred on by my fiancees recent addiction to BurgerTime and a desperate need to clean out our spare/junk room I'm determined to finish it. I've drawn up some new plans to replace the control panels (which look pretty nice right now, but are a pain to access for maintenance) with aluminum ones and make a new, smaller top. I'll also add a coin accepter and some legs to make it taller (it sits a 24" tall right now!).

I'm also going to change the crap X-Arcade joysticks out for some Suzo's that I've got lying around and incorporate a custom 4-8way switch (inspired by Randy-T's OmnistickProdigy).

I just had the temporary control panel surfaces and 4/8way switch prototypes cnc'd.
I've been changing my mind over what joysticks and 4/8way switches to use for this, so I had the control panels cut with every possible mounting hole included. Once I decide on something, I'll have new panels cut with only the holes needed for the particular joystick.

The switches shown will only work on Suzo500 joysticks (this switch is based on RandyT's OmniStickProdigy). I'm also working on a completely original 4/8way switch for Baolian type red ball-top joysticks. If all goes well, I'll end up using the red ball-tops .

The switch mech shown in the photo is very similar to RandyT's Omnistick Prodigy switch for Suzo sticks. I had a few Suzos sitting around so I thought I'd try it out, I'm not going to give any details of that switch so as not to step on anyones toes.

The switch that I'm still working on (having trouble finding time these days) is original and if all goes acording to plan it'll be the cheapest 4/8way switcheable stick out there, its going to need a lot of CNC trial and error though.
It should be easy to install on most CP's too- you just need to drill one 1/8" hole above the joystick. When I'm done I'll see about doing a small production run on them, but time isn't on my side anymore; my wedding is only a month away ( :o )

So.....should I take this as a sign that my build is progressing along nicely?  Mission, your cab must be ahead of schedule!

Oh, and biddy-ump ;D

HAHA!
Beleive it or not, I actually did something with this on Saturday bitches!  :-*

Here's a nice new cabinet top (this is my third and final attempt at it) and a few control panel sides (I did finish the control panels, but I'd like to make them a little cleaner looking).
