Now that we have lost NoNameMame
« on: August 26, 2004, 04:30:24 pm »
Now that we have lost NoNameMame, what flavor of mame is recommended for use in a cabinet?
I'm currently running NoNameMame 0.81 and am having no issues, but a friend of mine just got a complete set of 0.86 roms and I'd like to run a few of the newly added games in my cabinet. I liked NoNameMame because it allowed me to disable the disclaimer and game warnings (among other things) that would confuse my friends and their kids.
So are these features available in another flavor of a command line version of mame?

I hope TheGatesOfBill comes out of NoNameMame retirement! Please...

I'm currently running win2k, arcadeVGA, 25" arcade monitor, nonamemame 0.81, mamewah

thanks,
-jimC

If you don't mind "rolling your own" you can still make a psuedo NoNameMAME from other builds.

Start with normal MAME source.

Add Mame Analog +  from http://www.urebelscum.speedhost.com/ (not a current build, though, and maybe no longer required)

Add Skip Disclaimers, Skip Bad Dumps, and Artwork fill edges from http://freewebhosting.hostdepartment.com/S/SirPoonga/hacks.html

Add -ssf, -fsf, and other fixes from
http://home.earthlink.net/~alank2/mame/custommame.htm

For Pong and Monaco, just use an old NoName version.

I miss NoName too, though!

You can disable the disclaimer (and other messages) with regular mame

Note, I am not sure if these will work with .86.  Hvaen't got my hands on .86 code yet.  They changed alot of stuff in .86 codewise.

WHOA! Just a cotton picking minute here. Who said anything about loosing No Name MAME? I wanted to wait for the MAME Devs to finish their huge core changes, and I felt like a little vacation. Unfortunately, school is starting on Wednesday, and I have a pretty heavy course load and a job. I promise I will still do my best to find time to work on it though.

Well, your website has said since July that you were throwing in the towel for a bit and stepping back for a while.

and, btw, I still use nonamemame almost every day.. (ok, less now that my cabinet is ripped apart).

I don't know why people don't realize you can have more then one mame version on their machine.

I'm very sorry for the long delays. I am still alive. For the few people who still remember No Name MAME, it will return. Unfortunately, Senior year has kept me far busier than I had thought. Once I get the chance, I'll look through the source to whatever the heck the newest official MAME is and start rolling everything back into it. I really could use some help though, and any help I get can only lead to a faster release. Of course, I've asked for help in the past when it was actually pretty active, and nobody cared than, so I'm sure noone will care to help now either.

I can help. I'd like to unify my changes with whatever you do to NoName. If you get me the diffs to the last working version of NoName, I can make the necessary changes to bring everything up to v0.90. Of course, the new .91 will probably be out before then. :) The trickiest part will probably be unifying SirPoonga's artwork code with my own artwork code. Hopefully nothing I can't handle.

NoNameMame sounds better than BuddaMame also. :)

I have changed my nickname to "Cakemeister". Please do not PM the Buddabing account because I do not check it anymore.

Please read the wiki!

Happy for the help. The biggest problem with the last working version of No Name MAME was that it was right before the official MAME had its core changed around again, so alot of stugff broke. I could still get you a diff if you want though. Actually, the last version also had broken Analog+ and other things didn't it? I'll have to look.

Glad to hear you haven't abandoned it.  It's my favorite build of MAME.  I'm sure others here agree as well.  :)

Okay, just to get a bit more information out there. The deadline for my Senior Mastery Project (the wonderful "ASCII Tetris") is February 18th. After that is Febrauary break, and I'll (hopefully) be able to work on No Name MAME than. Also, if there are no objections, I'm thinking about sticking the label of postcardware on No Name MAME. Basically that means if you like the piece of software, feel free to fire a post card off to me. I'll include my mailing address in the documentation of the next version, or via e-mail if anyone wants it.

Cool!  Now we will know where to stalk you if you don't have an updated version 2 days after a release :)

I don't think anyone will care... but I don't believe you are allowed to change the license for a mame derivative to be different then mames.  But you should probably take a quick look....

I don't believe that the mame team will be worried about you scamming all those postcards off on their expense... Heck... I only allow myself 2 - 3 postcardware apps a year!  Any more and I have to start worrying about my postcard expenses... So I might not send one to Aaron if I have to send one to you :)

You aren't. But (in my mind at least) postcardware is more a concept than a license. All of MAME's license will still apply.

Can someone fill me in on something.  What's the benefit of using a different build of Mame?  Are these different builds (nonamemame, analongmame, etc.) tweaks of the official Mame made to fix specific bugs or change specific idiosyncrasies?  What's the prime benefit of nonamemame?

And somebody please tell me more about Pong!

Just to elaborate -

Bascially yes, the different builds of mame essentially contain tweaks/patches to do things in a slightly different way. This can be a variety of different things. One of the reasons that NoName was so popular is that a lot of effort was put into gathering lots of different patches together in one build.

eg:

Complete "warning" message removal. More recent builds of original mame let you turn off lots of the "gameinfo" messages that pop up, but not if a game is not fully emulated. This removes all messages.

Patches to help games run better on cabs - eg the inputs for gear shifters are not consistent in mame (I think) and do not always appear to match the arcade - eg poleposition. A patch solves this if you have a gear shifter on your cab

Analog mame - again recent builds of mame have improved lightgun/dual mice support - but analog mame had special input options to map inputs for people using more than 1 mice on  system.

Pong - pong is not in mame anymore (I've forgotten the exact reason - something to do with not really being emulation?). It was in Noname....

You get the idea...

Um, how to get it to run on my home PC?!  It's not a rom set, right?  Is there a Pong simulator built into nonamemame?  Is there somewhere where I can download nonamemame?

It was removed because it was a simulation, not an emulation. And it is built right into No Name MAME, just run "noname pong" and it'll load right up for you. If you want frontends to detect it, put a file called "pong.zip" in your roms folder (it doesn't matter what is in the zip).

I assume that you are Art than. I replied to your e-mail. I hope to get working on a new version of No Name MAME next week. School has kept me much busier than I thought, and unforunately that come first.

On the bright side (for me anyways), I got into Wentworth Institute of Technology with a $5000 a year scholarship. It was my third choice, but its not bad, and I haven't heard from the first two yet.

Thanks, my first choice is RPI, and it looks like I'm right on the border, so I have my fingers crossed.

NOTE: If anyone happens to work in RPI admissions and appreciates No Name MAME.... ;)

Okay, quick update. I just got into RIT, still waiting to hear back from RPI. I'm very happy with RIT though, so I'm not worried really. As for getting back to No Name MAME, school is still hitting me hard (I got a bit behind so I'm sorta playing catch up).

Oh, and a side note, I finally actually got out to WIT, and it sucked. Hard.
