Front End for a cocktail or vertical w/ flipping?
« on: August 24, 2004, 01:12:55 am »

I've got most of my cocktail cabinet done with the exception of cleaning up a bit of wiring and chosing an interface. The cocktail is equiped with a Radeon All in Wonder (supports rotation). The table is a head to head midway style w/ a 19" SVGA monitor.

The display or FE needs a 90 degree counter clockwise rotation.

I guess my question is can anyone identify any short comings of setting the vid card to display at the 90 degree rotation and use something like vertiwah and configure the games for cocktail mode or is it actually better to use a front end that support rotation (menu) like gamelauncher or cocktailFE, etc?

Thanks in advance,

-Goz

Whilst I don't have a graphics card installed that supports rotation out of the box, I've found that using ArcadeOS and AdvanceMAME has solved all of my software requirements. Sure, perhaps it's not the prettiest out of the box, but it works well, fits well with the era of games I want, and has yet to fail. AdvanceMAME, once configured, works perfectly.

Yes, I am using DOS on my box, but that is all I need. Don't know if this helps, but if your cabinet isn't going to be doing much else, this does it fine, especially if you use Fraggals's CD installation.

I am considering using the features of the All in Wonder card such as the remote and TV in, etc and kind of make it a multimedia-cocktail so DOS is likely out. While DOS boots quickly it is also impossible for me to have sound in DOS as there are no sound drivers for my sound card.

I appreciate the reply though.

Thanks,

Hmm... I assume that you've thought about how you are going to watch TV/DVDs/videos on it, if this is what you plan to do (rather than multimedia being music only)? Cocktail machines aren't exactly the best arrangement for watching TV :)

Yeah, I've thought about the angle problem of usability in a cocktail and I have come up with a hydraulic solution. I'm still trying to determine, if I'd even use it and weigh that against the cost. But always nice to have vision and leave options open. But yeah was thinking also movies, MP3 and FM RADIO. Not that I need it in my game room which already has a big screen, jukebox, and the rest of the toys.

Yeah, some of us have all the luck - I'm still trying to convince my partner where my cocktail cab should be... she's not convinced - espcially as we don't have room to swing our cat, let alone have a games room...

How have you envisaged the hydraulic solution to work? I'd be most interested to learn about it.

Anyone out there with a cocktail cabinet and an opinion on the question of rotation via drivers and using a vertical front end like vertiwah in cocktail mode vs using something like cocktailFE, etc...  which does the rotation in software?

Thanks,

not sure about kymaera but in 3darcade you either just hit a key to switch or let the fe switch skins automatically depending on the orientation of the last game run.

if you download 3darcade...unzip it..run fe3darcade.exe...pressing 8 will switch between two skins..in the default 3darcade skin between a horzontal and a vertical layout of the same skin.

I have a cocktail. I use advmenu and it allows you to do rotation of the screen.
