Galaga cheat... 100% true!
« on: August 22, 2004, 10:02:24 pm »
In case you haven't heard of it, there's a cheat built into galaga supposedly by one of the original programmers so that he could get the high score on any machine...  Well, it's true.

Download the attached file "galagao-1.txt" convert the extension to ".sta" and then place the file in "program files/mame/sta"  unless you installed mame to a different place, then it's up to you to find where to put the file.

Once you've done that, start "galagao" aka. "Galaga (Namco)", but NOT "galaga" aka. "Galaga (Namco Rev. B)

When it's ready for coins press F7 then the #1 (the same one you use to start a game, not on the num-pad.

If you did all that right, it should load up to just after the bugs have stopped shooting.  And again for those who don't know, for the rest of the game, not a single other bug will shoot at you!

Have fun!

[edit] for some reason it's not working for me any more... sorry for wasting your time if it doesn't work for you either.[/edit]

If there's bees in the trap I'm catching em
By the thorax and abdomen
And sanding the stingers down to a rough quill
Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again
In my land of pretend
I use bees as a mf'n pen

It's not a "Hack".

Here's the story as I know it...

One of the original programers wanted to be able to get the high score on any galaga machine so he put the cheat into the code of the ORIGINAL galaga boards.

The way it is done is, when you start the game kill everything except the two bugs to the far left of the screen.  They will then keep flying down and firing at you for about 15 minutes.  If you stay all the way to the right side of the screen that is the safest place, although they can still hit you there, it is less likely that you will have to move.  After the aproximate 15 min is up they will stop shooting at you.  Let them pass a few more times, then kill them.  That's it, nothing else will shoot at you for the rest of the game.

The attachement that I have included is nothing more than a state save that I made by hitting "shift F7" when I had completed the 15 minutes of waiting.

Holy ****!! ;D
It worked cool.  I did the "shot em all and wait" method.  I sat in the right corner once there was only 2 left. I never  had to move after that.  They just ran a loop, one looped at the bottom then would come out the top.  The other ship was coming from top will the other looped,  and have a set fire seuence, they will not fire, then fire from the top either 1 or 2 shots for three sets then repeat.  Now all i have to do is learn to not to run into them.  and also try it on the Galaga/ Mrs. Pac-man machines.  You also dont have to wait 15 minutes it only took me about 5 minutes of them looping before they quite shooting

Yeah, but I have never been able to get it to work myself. This sta file might help.

Trouble is I don't have the galagao rom so I'll have to try it tonight (I hope my other machine does have it).

I have tried this cheat many times, but I have never gotten it to work. Does it only work on a specific version of the rom?
