christmas eve 1974 changed my life. this is what i woke up to after hiding under my bed all night:

in the top left is the high school i would later spend many a tortured day at (if there is a god, why didnt THAT blow away? hehe).
 those of you affected by hurricane charlie, i know what its like. but when ever i think of it, this picture always brings a smile to my face. not sure why. maybe because there is always something salvagable out of any situation. of course those affected will probably not be able to read this for a short while but hang in there!

I live in Saint Petersburg in a level A evacuation zone.  We were under a mandatory evacuation since we were the ones supposed to be hit.  Luckily for us and unluckily for others the storm took a turn and pretty much missed us completely.  Here is a pic of one thing I definitely wanted to try and save.

hehe. nice one   . i reckon though it would be better off low, if the roof were to have come off then the cab might have done a Dorothy!!  the cyclone that hit us thirty years ago no one prepared for whatsoever. dunno if you know the aussie expression "she'll be right". well, that was the attitude of everyone. so absolutely everything was soaked through if it didn't blow away. even today, if i smell something musty like an old book that got left out in the rain, it transports me back- in a good way. can you imagine what an adventure it was for a 5 year old boy? so many ruins to play in, so much junk to bring home. funny though, the grown-ups didn't see it that way...

Actually we are in a really bad flood zone.  Any kind of surge and we are flooded so number one priority is to get things off the ground.  We haven't flooded yet in the five years we have lived here but we have had water 3/4 the way up our driveway.

oh, forgot about storm-surge. good point.

oh, and forget bricks!! straight after that cyclone everone built their houses from pre-fab concrete!! very ugly and hot. people have relaxed a bit now, but there are building codes to make houses more survivable. like through-rods to tie the roof down rather than kinda just sitting there
