Building for my hubby

I am starting a aracde project - building a cockpit racer for my awesome husband. So far I have built only the seat frame with a momo steering wheel and pedals.  We have gotten a bit sidetracked on game play   and as a result the building has stopped.

I desperately want to start building an upright cabinet especially since I have just finished reading Project Arcade - what a great book.... Sadly, my hubby wants me to wait until i finsh my first project. I am trying to convince him this will be a joint project (my woodwork skills/his soldering/computer wiring skills) but I think i will be stuck with my desktop MAME controller until I finish off the racer. Altho' he is quite keen to have a 4 player machine we can play with our friends when they come over.... so who knows we may just get it built sooner.

Now, I don't condone spousal abuse, but can you thrash him severely about the head and shoulders?  June's first on my list for wife swaps, but you just may vault over her (depending on your woodworking skills, of course   )

Seriously, glad to see the women coming out of the woodwork.  These guys can get to be so boring at times...but watch out for danny_galaga, he's got some weird "tounge" thing I don't wanna know about...but he keeps telling me about it.

1hookedspacecadet took a little time off to finish up other tasks and upon his return to BYOAC realized that he had placed his quarters in another dimension made of female cabinet builders and complaining husbands.

I think it would depend on how much room you have to work.  Working on two cabinets only takes twice as much room and you only have to cleanup once.  Not to mention you can work on the same things at the same time.  If you're strapped for room then do one at a time.

AMEN!! Mom wasn't real pleased when my father and I took over the 25' x 15' room downstairs for our N scale trains, heh.

Well done on deciding to build a cab for your hubby (what a lucky bloke).
When I bought all my parts the exchange rate was terrible but it was still cheaper to get everything overseas.
www.therealbobroberts.com is where I got all the buttons, microswitches and a few joysticks.  He is helpful and probably has the best price.
www.ultimarc.com for the ipac4, optipac and t-sticks - although www.ozstick.com.au is the Australian distributor for them so may be cheaper to get locally.
www.oscarcontrols.com great spinners and huge contributor to BYOAC community (he helped with the designs for my cab)

If you get all the parts for both projects at the same time you will of course save on shipping costs, perhaps even get discounts on purchases depending on volume.

Build them at the same time so that they are finished together and you can have a big arcade party.

Good news:  
after lots of research we have finally settled on a design for the arcade racing cab - based on the buck rogers sitdown cab. Now I can get into constructrion. woo hoo! Wanted to have a cockpit feel, without the full enclosure and also a place to put sidewinder joystick and steering wheel.

We dont have a digital camera so i cant take pics yet of construction or of slot cars. I will have to take photos and scan them in.

(Slot cars 1/32 scale, 2 lanes on a 1.8X1.2 and 2.1X0.9M 'L' shaped tables. My hubby bought me a scalextric V8 bathurst set for my birthday and we expanded it)

Slot Cars! I filled my entire basement floor with an awesome layout when I was younger. The only empty space was a path to the laundery room. It took over a week to get the entire track clean so the cars wouldn't slow down and stop. 25 lap races went on forever.

Honestly Building Mame cabs would not trump other important priorites but it is something great that you guys can do together and I wouldn't keep pushing it aside for too long.

Project Update:

We have since painted the seat base frame black and added surround sound speakers to the seat headrest. We are still researching the design for the cab so construction has momentarily stopped (but of course the game play hasn't )

Oh and dare I say that I started construction inside...   but soon moved it out into the garage... we also bought a drop saw   after it took soooo long to cut all those pieces of wood by hand.... now I am set for cutting up the frame pieces for all future cabinet projects

I am afraid to admit that I am using the pc racer more than my hubby is...... NFSU is very addictive... Its a shame that my mame racing games dont work well on  a360degree wheel.
