ArcadeVGA 640x288 Resolution
« on: August 15, 2004, 08:45:22 pm »
I have a Sanyo 20EZ Arcade Monitor and an ArcadeVGA card im using the non-interlaced 640x288 Resolution so Windows and MAMEWah are all flicker free and look beautiful! Only problem is how am I suppose to run any other programs that dont take 640x288??? When I run anything with a standard resolution ie 640x480, 1024x768 320x240 I need to adjust my verticle hold knob and then nothing will run at 640x288!! So I cant really run any other emulators! Anyone have any suggestions or work arounds?? MAME Works awsome as all the resolutions I have configured for the current verticle hold setting...

If anyone could fill me in on what resolutions work best for Windows desktop, MAMEWah, other EMUs etc that'd be great!

It's been discussed to death here.. but here goes.  It all depends on what games you play.

The best resolution I found for me is:

Windows:  640x480 (interlaced)
MAMEWAH: 640x240 (non-interlaced)

The reason it's best is because most of the games I play (like Neo Geo and most horizontal games) are @ 240 lines or less!  Vertical games are stretched to 640x480 and games higher than 240 are also stretched.

The problem with monitors (as opposed to computer monitors) is that they do not automatically change their hold settings when the resolution changes.

So you might stabalize at 640x288 lines, but when you start a neo geo game, it'll roll on you!

but 640x480 and 640x240 and ???x240 or less all have the same vertical hold! (640/2 = 240!)  So I set once and all works fine.

Good luck!

Thats exactly what I did, I said screw the  ??? x 288 resolutions because once I configure Windows for 640 x 480 EVERY other resolution just works beautiful! EXCEPT 800 x 600 and 1024 x 768 but nothing really runs at that either.... so everything but those and ??? x 288 resolutions work, so I just used the MAME resolution tool and changed those 288 resolutions to somthing that works...
