Free Ipods....really!
« on: August 13, 2004, 11:22:07 am »
Saw this on another board, so decided to try it here.

Okay, here is how it works:

freeipods.com (dont click through this LINK!)

what ya need to do is this: fill out your info and start the process, choose what color iPod you want and refer 5 friends through email. Then, you can either sign up for the free 50 days of aol (Dont worry, once you get your iPod in the mail, just cancel your aol account like it says you can before the 50 days is up so that they dont charge you for a month of service) and your good. Or sign up for BMG...any of the offers.

BUT, the Trick is this, remember those 5 friends? you need atleast 5 people to sign up for 1 of the options your were given previously to do the same, when all 5 sign up, thats when you get that iPod.

So this is where we all come in, They give a URL just like the one I have above for people to click on and join in under you. If we keep this going, and we all help each other, well all have free ipods, update your url post with how many more accounts you need and then when your complete, you done. close that post and move to the next person that needs help.

It may seem like alot of work, but for a 299.99 iPod for just alittle investigative info, you cant go wrong.

Here's my link:

http://www.freeiPods.com/...er=7973122

Maybe we can update this thread when we get either new signups, or folks get their five.

The free iPod deal is actually put on by the Free Flatscreen TV people, its seperate, but its basically the same type of thing.

They are real offers though, its just hard to convince people otherwise.  The internet community has been drilled that anything "free" is automatically a scam, so its hard to get people to participate in something like this when its legitimate.  I suppose thats good in its own way though, at least people wont fall for the false and true scams.  But it sure makes it trickier to finish getting referrals.

Still though...if you just looked at the evidence it would quickly be clear that its not a scam.  Major tech/geek news websites have covered the issue and agreed that its a real offer.  Check out enGadget.com, they covered it originally.

Or even better, do a Google search for "free flatscreen"  In the paid links, you'll see advertisements that are really peoples referral links.  Google's advertisements are approved by a human being, and they wouldn't allow an advertisement to be placed it if was in fact a scam.

Both the iPod and flatscreen offers are legitimate, it can just be slow to build up the referral count.  But for something free, its a fair enough trade off :)

1. It's a pyramid scheme.
2. Google Ads are not that well scrutinized. I had to block one ad for MAME ROM cds from eligible ads for BYOAC.

That's like saying I've got a "business opportunity" and if you like what you see, you can make more at your part-time job than you do at your full-time job!  And you'll probably want to quit your current full-time job when you start making 6 figures at your part-time job!

Where do I sign up?!? (wait, I already did  :P)

"1. It's a pyramid scheme."

Not in the FTC legal sense.  It is actually free to join.  besides, from the shear number of people I've talked to about it where I live, most have never heard of it so that would place the whole process fairly high in the pyramid.
Still in the collecting parts and ideas phase of cabinet building.

But if don't have 5 additional signups within the 50 day cancellation period, it does cost you money.

Its not necessarily a scam, but it is a scheme. If your time and friends mean nothing to you, go for it.  Otherwise stop being someone elses shill, get some self-respect, and work to earn the things you want  ;D

You can cancel within the 50 days (or whatever time the offer is) just so long as your offer has been checked and 'approved' by freeipods (this usually takes 1 to 7 days depending on the offer). Some of the offers are actually not that bad- I signed up for Real Rhapsody and I think that I might keep it.

I just got my 5th referral today! FreeiPods took a few hours to verify that each of my referrals were legitimate and then I ordered my iPod! I should get it sometime in the next two weeks, so long as there isn't another world shortage of iPods.
[shameless-plug]There's a page with a good guide to signing up here[/shameless-plug]

On another note;
There are a million forums out there discussing the free iPods and freeflatscreens right now, there's little reason to start choking up the BYOAC forum with more. The GearLive 'Free' Forum is a better place for this:
http://gearlive.com/forums/viewforum.php?f=13

it's just too bad that the majority of people on that forum are under 10 years old (all they seem to post is 'gimme! gimme! gimme!')

Its still a pyramid scheme if u look at the structure.(one person signs up 5 people who in turn sign up 5 other people)

That doesn't necessarily make it a pyramid scheme; nobody's getting screwed out of anything here. Here's a quote from a recent interview with the head of the company:

"We're a marketing firm," said Jewell. "We're sending these people to our advertisers. We cringe when we hear 'pyramid' or 'scheme.' We're more closely associated with viral marketing, with the subservient chicken, than Amway."

The full interview is at Wired's site  here.
