GensFE Question
« on: August 12, 2004, 11:29:44 am »
Quickie for anyone running GensFE. Is it possible anywhere to set Gens to run at a resolution of 640 x 288?

A stone falls on the pot, woe to the pot. A pot falls on the stone, woe to the pot. In both cases it is bad for the pot.

Why would you want to?  IIRC the Genesis ran at 320x240 and something else (similarly low).

Try GensAVGA, from www.screenshotarchive.com

Basically because the only res I can run Mamewah / Mame and Windows in (with ArcaceVGA / JPAC) without throwing out the V-Hold is 640 x 288. At the moment, everything works great until I select GensFE from the Mamewah menu, then boom .. vertical roll is back.

Thx :) I'll try GensAVGA!

So you are running all games in 640x288??  I'd suggest you adjust your v-hold (keep adjusting for each res. until no roll), or clean the pot if it is old.  Sounds like you are not getting the benefit of an arcade monitor if you have to use 640x288 *all* the time...

Well .. the problem was, I was forever on my hands and knees moving the V-Hold, switching between Windows / Mamewah, as there was no spot on the pot that would keep both in sync. Also, in 800 x 600 Windows through the ArcadeVGA / JPAC looked absolutely awful .. the refresh rate was giving a strobing effect and the text looked blurred.

It's more of a compromise than a desired resolution .. both Mamewah and Windows look superb now though at 640 x 288. The trouble is, any time I want to make an adjustment in Windows I have to switch back to 800 x 600 as you cant see all the options / boxes you need to. Someone else had exactly the same problem, it was only through his posts that I found the solution .. I was about to hack open my cable. The monitors brand new, and I've had no problems with any other system .. all have worked seemlessly, so I guess it's just a quirk of the combination .. AVGA / JPAC and my cab?

What's the normal resolution to run in?

Well there's nothing wrong with running 640x288, but if you are using that for games as well then they can't be running at native resolutions...If your monitor is new you should definately be able to get the 'sweet spot' - you just need to make tiny adjustments at a time...sometimes needs a lot of time spent to get it right for everything...
