Should I expect any problems from a TV in a cocktail?
« on: August 09, 2004, 06:10:15 pm »
I'm designing a cocktail that I'm gonna build for my cousin.  I am trying to figure out if I want to put in a nice arcade monitor or a TV in this thing.  If it was my own personal cocktail cabinet I was building, I'd definately go with an arcade monitor, but since it's not mine, and my cousin lives like 2 states away from me, I am afraid to put in an arcade monitor for fear of failure.  If something goes wrong with it, I'm not around to figure out the problem or replace it or anything... TV would be much less likely to fail I think.  So I am debating between the two.  What do you guys think?

Would it be difficult to mount a TV in a cocktail cabinet?  Should I remove it from it's casing before doing this?

Problems with running a TV while it's facing up toward the ceiling?

Any opinions or advice would be helpful.

I don't think you'll find too many problems running a TV on it's back. Of course it's not reccommended, but it's unlikely to just completely fail or explode or anything.

I would have thought the biggest problem would be space inside the cocktail. Just cramming a reasonably sized arcade monitor into a cocktail along with boards / coin mech etc. is quite a challenge. TVs tend to be a lot more bulky, even when de-cased.

You could end up with a pretty big cocktail cab housing a pretty small screen. This can tend to look a bit rubbish.

moving a tv into a cocktail cab might affect the display due to earths magnetic field.

this happens if rotate arcade monitor from horizontal to vertical position.

most arcade monitors have degausing coils that remove the image distortion on power up.

TVs dont have this - you might need to use a degaussing coil manually.

once it is in positionand degaussed you should be ok - i think!

Should I worry about an arcade monitor failing if I just use that?

I would think an arcade monitor would be less likely to fail considering the abuse they are meant to take.  Think about how long they are left on...24hrs a day at some arcades.  Also think about all the monitors from the 80's that actually still work.  The d9200 may be an exception considering the amount of failure posts I saw a while back.(Although I haven't had any trouble with mine)

A tube's a tube. A tube in an arcade monitor is identical to a TV tube. However newer tv's obiously use the cheapest components possible, including tubes, so you might have a longevity issue even if you use it as a normal TV.

The magnetism affects only the tube, not the electronics. And affects arcade tubes equally to TV tubes.  Like arcade monitors, every time you turn on your TV (at least 20 minutes apart) it has a built in degaussing circuit to remove the effects of the earth's magnetic field from the tube.

So the ONLY issue is heat build up due to a closed TV shell and changed angle of the main circuit board.  I would remove the shell and mount it open and add a 120 volt high velocity/low noise fan in the bottom of the cocktail to ensure proper airflow (See Kyle Lindstrom's Ms.Pac cocktail instructions for where to mount the fan and air intake)
