Vertical Rolling between Mame / Windows / Anything else
« on: August 09, 2004, 11:51:19 am »
Quote
I am tring to finally finish my 6month plus project.  I have a WG 25k7193  monitor and am using ArcadeVGA and windows XP Pro as I move from mamewah to winodws the vert scrolls. also some games the bottom is cut off no matter what adjustment I do.  I can get it to stop scrolling but it is a pain every time i switch from game to mamewah to game fix the scrolling it is driving me nuts.

I'm just quoting this, as I was looking for the solution to the same problem through a search - but this thread had no replies. I'm also using an ArcadeVGA and am having the same problem. It'll hold until you do ANYTHING, then you have to constantly get your hands on the V-Hold pot again to correct the next screen. Anyone had a similar problem / solution?

Thx

TJ

I had a problem with this too, I just had to find a medium that would work with all the different screens.

i.e. Set Mamewah Res. to 368X280, Windows to 640X280 (I think) and screwed around with the NES and SNES Res. till it all worked out.

Hope the best of luck to you. Maybe someone else will have a better answer........ ??? ???

Thanks a lot :)

How do I get 640 x 280 on Windows? If I right click on the desktop (XP) then go to properties / settings, the smallest setting is 800x600.

I'll try also changing the resolutions fro Mamewah etc .. thanks again for the advice!

Did you load the ArcadeVGA  Resolutions that came with the card? It has the little Galaga Bug in the startup menu at the bottom of screen in windows. That's where you change Windows Resolutions.

Okay, that worked a treat on the desktop, it looks great and is perfect upon boot. Alas! When I change to Mamewah, I get the rools again. Possibly, I'm missing a setting in Mamewah?

Strange this is though, I wanted to see if I could load some of the games even with the rolling Mamewah. Several, once loaded, look great like the desktop .. so I have perfect desktop, rolling Mamewah, perfect Mame game.

Then others, I have perfect desktop, rolling Mamewah, rolling game. The trouble is, when I tweak either Mamewah or Mame game, bang goes the desktop.

I've searched for the elusive 'sweet spot', but I think the difference between where the desktop is spot on, and where Mamewah / Mame is spot on, is too far (i.e. the midpoint between the two will not stabilise all).

So near, yet so far! :)

I'm having this same problem!! You just need to tweak the resolutions of some games, as for MAMEWah you need to change the Layout Design to a diffrent resolution, say just like your desktop, if you go in the layout designer and open a default layout one of the menus will allow you to change the resolution to whatever you wish!

I read a post about using the AV Res utility which I have, BUT make sure you click the 60HZ Only icon, this sets ALL MAME Games to the same frequency which in turn should fix your verticle hold problem!

I also assumed that if I change the verticle hold pot on the monitor to work with 640x288 then everything else wouldnt work, but apparantly that isnt the case!! Someone claimed to have done just that and fixed all problems! i'll have to try tonight! Hope that helps...

I agree with chrisinauz . You probably need to change your resolution in MameWAH. If you don't have it already, you should download MameWAH Setup Utility. It makes things much easier!! There, you could change the MameWAH res. to something like 368 X 280 easily, thats what I have mine on.

Hey Cheers Chris! Common sense is telling me therein lies the problem!

I'm struggling though to get Mamewah to use 640x288 like Windows. In the layout text, it says Mamewah checks the C:\(Path to Mamewah)\layouts\layout.lay. Well, I took the idiots route and just removed all the others from the C:\Mamewah\layouts folder except the 640x288 Folder, and (as it says in the layout text) it's obviously defaulting to the classic layout still.

How exactly do I set the 640x288 as default res?

I just used MameWAH Setup Utility and it lets you use the GUI to click on the folder (Res.) you want ;D ;D

Ahhhhh :)

The default path is classic 640 x 480!! I just removed the 'layout.lay' from the 640 x 480 folder and pasted in the 'layout.lay' file from the 640 x 288 folder, everything now is spot on!!

Thanks Chris, I was just about to hack open the cable and start messing with Sync wires!!

This forum ROCKS!!!

Hey GD .. thanks

Does the Mamewah setup utility work with the latest version of Mamewah? The main reason I took the other route is because on the site it said it would not work with higher than v9.70. I've only just started using Mamewah, so I'm guessing it's the latest version.

Yup i'm using MAMEWah setup with the latest MAMEWah works perfect, now I have to redesign my custom layouts to that resolution ARGGHH... im still praying to the lord almighty that 640x288 will work on my ArcadeMonitor, because I cant stand that horrible refresh rate on any other resolution....

Ohh and if you find your still getting some scrolling with some games you can use an AWSOME tool on the MAMEWah website to set resolutions for MAME, it'll turn EVERY game with a certain resolution to a diffrent working one, instead of editing every .INI file on its own haha...

Yep ... the refresh rate at higher resolutions is enough to drive you mad! Also, the text looks really BAAAD on the desktop unless its at 640 x 288.

The only downside .. have you tried doing anything on the desktop? You can't see all the programs, as theres no room, you can't edit the bottom of the display properties, as they're off screen .. so I'm still having to change back to 800x 600 (and then re-adjust the V-Hold again) .. every time I want to make any adjustment from Windows.

If you manage to get successful with the layouts at that size .. please let me know! Lots of the layouts at the screenshotarchives site I really like, but of course, they won't fit! :(

So .. now off to find the aforementioned tool from the Mamewah site. Is this a one by one change, or an 'auto for all'? Some games, such as 'Stratof' .. simply won't load, but as I've only just updated Mame, I'm not sure if this is to do with the current problems, or just the same for everyone? Anyone tried that game?

Heres the link for the MAME tool to adjust the resolutions, if theres a resolution that doesnt work you can pick one that does and it will change ALL of them...

http://mamewah.mameworld.net/downloads/avga_mame_res_tool.zip

As for the windows desktop, not sure how to get around that, I to have to change to 800x600 to view the whole thing, I wonder if you turn auto pan on it would change that....

As for the screenshots if your familar with the MAMEWah Layout Designer you can adjust the size that the screenshots will display for a particular layout! So choose the 640x288 layout and drag the "Artwork1" box to a smaller size, that should fix it, i'm going to re-make some nice MAME layouts into 640x288 i'll send you the files once im done, should be tonight...

Awesome .. thanks Chris. I've stumbled across the next problem .. with GensFE, same ole same ole .. I'm not sure that with this (or other emulators) the same resolution is possible, i.e. 640 x 288. I was planning on putting on Neo / U64 Emus too .. time to explore :)
