Arcade monitor static
« on: August 06, 2004, 01:32:49 pm »
About every 10 seconds a little static pops up during game play. It is just a few bits of static but it really annoys me. What could be the cause of this.

BTW It is a brandnew mvs board and kof2k2 so I doubt they are the problem.

Someone mentioned check the voltage but I dont know what I am doing Please help.

Here is what I think is the monitor control panel is there anything I should do with this :) Thank you

You might have a failing flyback or the anode wire is not secure inside the hole under the "suction cup" or the ground wire is not making good connection with the aquadag (black graphite conductive paint on the back of the tube).

However all of these cause a visible screen interference associated with them and will not be exactly timed all the time (random)

Make sure it's grounded pretty well all over.  That always helps.

Do you have a line filter on the power comming in to the cab?

I am sorry I know nothing about this. I was hoping I could just adjust a knob to fix it. I was told by a friend to buy a multimeter but that is all I have. How do I check the wires like anode and flyback.

It might be random static it just seems about every ten seconds its like a little color static that lasts about 1 second. It usually is very small and takes up like 1/100 of the screen. It just bugs me though :(

You might also have a cold solder joint that's arcing.

I know in some Trinitron computer monitors they like to have extra static discharge internally that sometimes affects the screen, but I think I read that was due to the design of the Trinitron's and chassis, especially once the patent ran out and others (besides Sony) started copying it.

In any case, if you don't know anything about monitors you shouldn't be messing with them until you read up on them, and basic electronic knowledge. Find someone qualified to look at it. Monitors can kill or maim (no pun intended), even when off if you start poking around them without knowing what you're doing, so it's best to either learn everything first, or find someone who can help you.

Safety about monitors has been written numerous times here so you can start here, or google for web pages that talk about safe handling of monitors and repair too.
