What about those who don't want either in office?

hehe. thats why peale is right in saying (i was corrected in another thread that it wasnt drew) 'none of the above'. if there are no independants or greens etc that you would want to vote for if you still go to vote and write 'none of the above' then that sends a message. after all, you're letting the ---daisies--- win by not voting...
its incredible that countries like australia, Uk, and the US have only two real choices when other democracies have many more to choose from and still run a tight ship (germany and holland come to mind).

i should correct that statement by saying there are three main parties in australia but two of them always form a coalition each time the larger of the two wins. the third party could never win on its own.

"...the third party could never win on its own. "

But they can tip the scales for the winner if they draw enough votes.

There are two sides, one for big government that rules people, (left), and one for small government that stays out of peoples business (right).

The one that comes up in the middle is usually pointing to one or two issues that neither party addresses.

Like in the US, it could be border security.  We have no drive to stop that in the US, and it's hurting the vast majority of us.

i should clarify what i said earlier, even though it's not relevent to this discussion. in oz we have the big two:

labor, which is roughly similar to your democrat

liberal, which approximates your republic

now, it happens that labour is big enough to win on its own. liberal NORMALLY isnt so they form a coalition with the national party (which might be considered a bit left or right of liberal depending on who you talk to), which couldnt possibly win on its own.

since those three have the same outcome, we still consider oz a two party system. there is another party that CAN tip the balance as you say. they then are the 'third party' even though obviously ive just listed four! they are called the democrats (who are a tad to the left of labor), and i will be voting for them when our elections come since their policy is more in keeping with what i want for our country.

anyway, IS there a third alternative in the US this time around? a genuine one that isnt fly by night? (our democrats were formed in the seventies by an ex liberal. their stated aim was 'to keep the ---daisies--- honest' !! which i like...
