I like SNAAAKE. I think he is a good guy. Being a MOD for another forum (different hobby) it's hard to just vote yes (although I'd like to) without knowing more of what went down. Some times there are personality conflicts and even the best / most helpful person can be a jerk when mixing with other specific people and MOD's are not excluded.

This reply is not a slam of either SNAAAKE or the MOD that banned him, and maybe the reasons are not our business, but I just wanted to state why I was holding off from immediately voting for SNAAAKe to stay.

Who's SNAKE and why's he banned.

Do a post search for SNAAAKE .  Then you'll get a list of the over 2000 posts he had.  Not sure why he was banned either..

The ban was mine.  The forum rules are either worth enforcing, or should simply be thrown out if they won't be enforced.  I like to think that the rules (simple though they are) keep this forum informative and friendly, at least that is the intent.

I am happy to say I can count the number of users permanently banned on one hand.

Snaake's IP/email have not been banned, and he is free to (and has I believe) create a new account to be a member of the community.

I won't be discussing the details of the ban, please don't ask.

Sorry to bring this up... but if you allow some one to join using the the same IP/Email.  Then what's the point in banning him?

I think that it was a shape up or ship out type thing. This is a pretty severe warning. Saint is being more than fair, perhaps a little lienient. SNAAAKE has been a long contributing member, however his recent actions against a regular have been less than kosher.
Granted, if I am right for the reason, I am suprised said regular has not been warned about his attitude.

I've never been a mod or run a message board, but I think the answer to the question is pretty obvious.  It's a warning (not to mention, if he signs up again he may have to choose a different username - but that's speculation).

That said, I have no idea what caused the ban, but in my time here I have noticed that "Snack" gets more than his share of unprovoked crap from people.  Like I say, I don't know what happened here, but if this is like other instances I've seen I feel like someone should mention that it seems a little disingenuous to turn a blind eye toward a person who doesn't technically break a rule, but deliberately goads someone else into breaking a rule out of pure mean-spiritedness.

I'll reiterate that I don't know what he did, so take what I'm saying with a grain of salt, but the guy's just about always good-natured.  He doesn't mind answering newbie questions that have been answered a hundred times before.  In fact, the only times I've ever seen him act any differently is when he gets exasperated about someone being mean to him for no apparent reason.

I think it's essentially a symbolic gesture.

It's actually fairly difficult to permanently ban someone who is determined to get back on to a message board such as this one.

Email addresses are easily changed. IP addresses can also be changed (albeit less easily) and are in any case not a reliable way of verifying someone's identity. I'm sure many people here post messages from public computers at work, college etc.

I don't know what Snaaake said that caused him to be banned. However the question I have is - was he provoked? If he was, then I think it would perhaps have been fairer to have also temporarily banned the person who provoked him.

Sounds like you may have some history with this someone as well. Someone who picks on newbies and goads regulars...

Hmmm...whoever could you be talking about?  ;D

Well...I have my suspicions.  I don't really have much of a history with anyone, I don't think.  But my buttons aren't easily pressed.  I just feel bad for Snaaake cos I've seen people having fun lighting his fuse before, and maybe it's short and accessible, but to just ignore the person who deliberately lights it time and time again is lame.

*disclaimer*  I don't know if anybody lit his fuse.  This is all based on past observations and may not apply to the current situation.

What I said int he other thread

Quote
True, he contributes that way.  Many of you are thinking he was banned out of this one instance.  No.  He's been temporarily banned for not following the rules several times before.  So I take it what was figured is if he isn't going to learn his lesson that way the next step is to permanantly ban that handle unless he does something about it.  I hope he realize that yeah, he can create a new handle but the admins can ban his IP (or IP range of the ISP he is on).  So hopefully he has learned his lesson now.
