shutting down DOS, any harm to computer?
« on: August 03, 2004, 09:45:55 pm »
ok, I had no takers on my last long convulted question re using DOS, so I'm gonna try one at a time.

You know how if you just turn off the computer with windows (hard shut down as opposed to a soft windows shut down with the start button) you can get corrupted files and it runs scan disk the next boot.

Well, do I recall correctly with DOS that is doesn't matter?  I recall, and it doesn't seem that long ago (does it?!) that we all would just flip the power switch off with no formal shut down procedures.

thanks,

paigeoliver

technically you should turn off from a command prompt so you don't turn off during a write, but Mame doesn't write much, worst thing that could happen is a corrupted high score table for a game, which could only happen if you turned off while exiting and got lucky at that.
Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

You should be completely safe just clicking off the computer in DOS. Like paigeoliver said, the only thing that can get corrupted are things MAME actually writes.
