Help--Problems with BitTorrent--Any experts out there?
« on: August 03, 2004, 09:10:14 pm »
I have downloaded the bit torrent program 3.4.2 in an effort to download the 3darcade video files at darrensweb.org, but regardless of what I try to download with the bit torrent, I keep getting the same message:  Problem connecting to tracker -<urlopen error (10060, 'Operation timed out')>    Anyone have any ideas how to correct this so that I can use the bit torrent to download files?  I believe bit torrent is loaded properly.
Any help would be great.
Thanks.

That tracker is probably dead, as it states. You need to find a new tracker.

EDIT: We'll I went and tried it from the 3darcade site and it seems to work.

try this link: http://darrensweb.org/log/dlcount.php?id=darrensweb&url=/downloads/mame_videos.torrent

or goto

http://3darcade.mameworld.net/ and click on videos

Excuse the noob experience here, but how do I find a new tracker?  All I did was download the bit torrent program 3.4.2 linked at darrensweb.org--what about a tracker and how do I get a "different" one?
Thanks for the help btw.

OK, it could be a bunch of problems.  Do you...

1.  Have a router?
2.  Firewall?
3.  Software Firewall?
4.  At a school?

Let me know about this or do a search for BT FAQ's many help files are out there, but if you post this info, I'll try and help out.  X

I not extremely knowledgeable about this, but here is what I know.  I have a router that is used for my DSL connection.  I was told that the router has some "built-in" firewall protection, therefore no other software firewall was needed.  So I DO have a router and not sure what kind of firewall protection the router has, but no firewall software was installed on my computer that I know of.
Thanks for the help!

OK, here is your problem.  What brand of router is it?  Usually you can go to the router website and the FAQ section and it will tell you how to get it to work with BT.  Also, I like to use Shadow's BT client (do a search) or ABC: http://www.afterdawn.com/software/p2p_software/p2p_applications/abc.cfm

Anyway, I use a Dlink router and they have spelled out instructions for BT use.  Usually you have to open the ports for BT and you should be good to go.  Sorry, but I'm about to head to bed tonight, I'll check again tomorrow, but maybe someone else can jump in when you post more info.  X

http://www.shareaza.com/

Handles bittorrents for you.

About the videos.... also the torrent link could be dead (why those guys battered you with techno babble instead of just saying that is beyond me.)  I would suggest trying supernova.org  I tell you the site specifically because afaik screen captures aren't illegal but mods feel free to remove it if it's a problem.

The link howard means to give you is actually suprnova.org

Since you're behind a router, you may want to dig out your manual and look through the settings.  On my linksys router, you can log into the router itself and use port forwarding and DMZ to help out with BT.  If you are familiar with this, its a good idea to forward ports 10000 - 50000 and/or DMZ your computer.  This does however leave you more vulnerable to virus attacks.

Otherwise, as was stated, the tracker may just be dead.

The beauty of shareaza, which I linked to, is that it uses more traditional p2p ports that are generally open by default and actually handles some of the port managment on it's own.

Thanks for correcting the typo.

A few friends of mine have been singing the praises of sharazaa lately.  Maybe I should see what it's all about.

I didn't think I would like it, but I really do.  The major thing I like is where it's a stand lone program I can close it and start dling a torrent later on without worrying about where I put the seed file or if I even saved it ect...

hey. this is kinda technical but if you can figure this out or anybody tell it in non computer geek terms that would help too. You can almost always go around the firewall. i have a router too with cable connection and what i do is i make my ip address from my computer the DMZ or demiliterized zone. it basically jumps around the router. be advised though then you will not be on a firewall so your subjected to anything from the net. you have been warned.  ;)  but there is a way on most routers to get into them via software for the router or by an ip address. this will help bittorrent get better speed once you connect to peers. this may help you with your problem too. any questions. oh i run bittorrent version "bittornado" from bittornado.com i believe is the site. this has worked great for me for as long as it has been out and its predessor shadows experimental clinet. hope this helps

I use BitTornado also, its very good.

I also mentioned DMZ and port forwarding on Linksys routers a few posts up, its a pretty simple process.
