Networkable DVD Player
« on: August 03, 2004, 12:14:46 pm »
Does anyone have one? Seen one being used? I am picking up the new TV Friday and now I want one of these also. Today is the first I have heard about it. It can play MP3s and MPEGS and JPGs. What I like about that is the boot time. Next to none. Let me know if you have seen or used one and how well they work. Thanks.

If its the front-loading Technics 110 Disc CD Changer, one of my friends might be interested. He saw mine and has been trying to find one for himself.

Man, I can't remember the company. A few years ago a company in Edina was making a 200 disc dvd changer that had an ethernet connection to look up dvd covers.  It had a pretty sweet menu system and all.

I have a Gateway 220 Connected DVD PLayer. The thing is pretty cool and  plays most modern video codecs and streams music and pictures in a very intuitive manner. The interface was easy enough for my wife and son to start using it the day we plugged it in and it get's alot of use.

Here is a pic. PM me if interested. It is like new. I would guess it has been used for 50 hours or less.

there are other streaming devices (that aren't DVD players) like the hauppauge mediaMVP

semi-relavant plug... i have an article up on my site about making a thrifty  PVR using mediaMVP and pvr250

*Shrug* YMMV ... i'll see if I can find some more links to networked dvd players... i think last months i, robot wired magazine had a small inset about them... there are wireless streaming media servers out there too (i think SMC makes one)

Other than the boot time...why do you want one?
Was is a network connection important?

I understand the reason for a network connection on tivo ;)  That is just awsome.

Let me know, maybe I will want on too.

Xbox, Mod Chip, XBMC (Xbox Media Center), and the DVD kit.

Boot straight into xbmc, plays tons of codecs, mp3's pics, shoutcast, etc.
Cheap. (If you get someone to flash your tsop, you don't even need to buy a mod chip).

I've got 2 of them, one with a 120 gig hd full of Kids movies for the kids, and 1 with the standard 8 gig drive running network only.

The only downside is that most xbox units cannot read cdr media, but I just play the files off my main machine..

(Downloaded a movie? just play straight from the bin/cue of iso file)

Later,
dabone

Well, I have a computer upstairs mostly for MP3s but it takes a while to boot and it is kinda loud. That and the wife isn't really keen on using it (wireless keyboard and small text). I just figure it would be easier and quicker (no boot up) if it was built into the DVD player. I also just got a new TV (See Here) and my DVD player is not progressive scan so I could use that also. Just trying to make it easier for the wife and myself. It was just a thought. The wife wasn't real happy that I wanted to spend MORE money already. I don't even have the TV yet. :P Oh well.
