No sound in AdvanceMAME DOS...
« on: August 03, 2004, 07:01:23 am »
Okay, I am admitting defeat... having got Fraggal's AdvanceMAME/DOS/ArcadeOS CD to install (easy), configured screenmodes (time-consuming but easy), got ArcadeOS rotated vertically (also easy), I cannot get AdvanceMAME to make any sound.

I know that the sound drivers are installed and configured correctly as ArcadeOS makes sounds (plays samples), but I cannot get AdvanceMAME to make noise.

AOS uses the SBPCI option; my motherboard is a generic VIA MVP3 chipset one running an AMD K6-2 500 CPU.

I've tried a few of the various options in advmame.rc, including seal/sb, auto, vsync/sb, but all to no avail.

Any ideas?

I had the exact same problem when I first set up AdvMame with onboard sound (whatever sound Dell Optiplex desktops came with). Eventually I got it going, but I can't remember how. I'll check a cab tonight and see what I've got AdvMame configured to.

That'd be most appreciated, as it's not the same without sound :P

I was having a sound problem with an onboard chipset as well, what I found was the chipset was using a DMA of 0 instead of the standard 1.  Make yourself a clean boot disc and put the program (diags.zip) that you will find here, http://www.mameworld.net/dosmame/other.php under the system analyser link, it will tell you all about your system settings.

Looks like I've got my soundcard setup with generic Crystal drivers in Autoexec, ArcadeOS.cfg is set to 1 (regular soundblaster) and I've got device_sound allegro in my AdvMame.RC (it's AdvanceMame 0.66).
I have no idea why allegro worked and nothing else, but thats the way it is.

If you want, I've already uploaded all the files from the Optiplex for someone else (13mb). It doesn't include the internal folders in Mame (roms, samples, snaps, cfg etc.). PM me and I'll let you know where to download them. It might help to take a look at someone elses config files.

Hmmm... that one doesn't work for me, but I'm going to try every sound setting to see if one of them works.

Thanks for the offer - I might take up the offer if trying every option fails.

Will give it a try and shall see how it goes... Should I find the same issue that you had, how do I fix it?

Okay, done this. Without loading autoexec.bat, the onboard sound chip doesn't show - no sound card dertected, but when I run sbcfg, I'm tod that it is using a DMA of 1.

I know the problem is AdvanceMAME, as ArcadeOS makes sound without problem, so I'm still no closer to identifying the issue... :P

I couldn't get any sound either!  I finally just installed a SB PCI card and now have other issues.....AdvMenu locks up and AOS won't load games.

After more trial and error, I did what everyone suggested and got hold of an ISA SB card - no more problems - I have sound is AOS and AdvMAME :)

Once I build my cocktail cab (I promised myself that I'd get the software running before I made the cab - I start tomorrow on the cab) I just need to work out exactly how to support the cards sticking up from my motherboard :)
