Wanted: Error-Free Transfers....
« on: July 29, 2004, 07:48:20 pm »
I got a MAME32 .82 Rom CD from Lazuras and I trid to copy/paste the DVD to the Roms folder (naturally).  Problem is, every so often I get a file that for some reason is unable to be copied (cyclic redunancy error or something?).  Now I'm like slowly highlighting a few here and a few there, waiting to get that error so I can skip that particular rom and continue from there.  At this rate, I'll have all the Roms loaded by Christmas.  Am I missing something?

Is it because I'm trying to copy too many at one time?

It could be one of a few things:

1.  The file itself is bad (probably not the case)
2.  The DVD is dirty and/or scratched (likely, as they scratch easily)
3.  Your DVD drive is dirty or has gone bad (also very likely)

Now, I had the same problem but got rid of it once I reinstalled WinXP.  And yeah, I only copied over what I could actually view on the page without scrolling.  Seemed to make things run along a little smoother.

I'm no expert, but "cyclic redundancy error" usually means somethign interfered with the burning process when the DVD was created. Find out if the burner you used has a replacement policy, mine did when I had this problem.

EDIT: Not to hijack, but I want to throw this out there: Every time I try to transfer a certain package of ROMs (not a problem with the whole DVD) Windows Explorer shuts down. Has anyone has this happen before? Was it a Windows problem or DVD problem?

If your getting a CRC error it's either a dirty or damaged cd, corrupt file/s or bad burner/reader. Try cleaning the CD/DVD, if the problem persists try it in another computer's burner. If you still have the problem then it's the CD/DVD, replace it. If it works then it's your burner/reader.

I am having the same problem.  I ordered my DVDs off a website in the UK...I got 2 sets of the same data, and both are bad...I'm thinking of trying to create an image of the disc, and then extract the data once on the HD...I think there are applications that will scan the data and recover the files...CRC checker or something...anyway, this is a long and tedious process, anyone know of any reasons why I shouldn't bother?

copy everything you can off the DVD then use one of the ROM torrents to get the rest. Or if you have broadband use the torrent to get everything, once you got one full set, upgrading to the next version is not nearly as bad, but getting CDs or DVDs from one the burners is the best way to get something to start from.
Personally I think it's just hte people burning the CDs or DVDs that use cheap media and the fastest burn speed possible, so even though the DVD read back fine on the same drive it was burned with, it may not read properly on another system.

The funny thing is, the website said they are all tested and verified...now, I have 10 DVDs of material I got from some guy in the UK and most of them are no good to me...I've tried them on 5 or 6 different PCs, and all with the same result...
Oh well, "caveat emptor"...I definitely won't be suggesting him to anyone...
Thanks for the input...
