Ok, so my PS2 is modded... What now?
« on: July 27, 2004, 01:33:31 pm »
Since I don't realy have a DVD burner, I'm kinda limited on what I can do with my recently modded PS2 and I am looking for suggestions of stuff to try out.

I may be mistaken on this, but isn't there some program that I can load up mp3s or mpegs or something of the sort?

I've got the DMS3, which has some sort of dev.olution mode or something like that, and I guess you can launch programs from the memory card, but I can't find any explinations of what programs can/can't do.
If there's bees in the trap I'm catching em
By the thorax and abdomen
And sanding the stingers down to a rough quill
Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again
In my land of pretend
I use bees as a mf'n pen

I'm in the same boat as you, I got my modded PS2 with the DCM9 chip this past Friday.

Once difference though, I got an outdated DVD burner off of Ebay for $38 + shipping.  Everyplace I've seen recommends burning your game backup DVD's at 1x so top speed didn't matter.

But, to answer your question, you can start with some Emulation discs:

PGEN runs Genesis, and I created a Sega Genesis disc last night, it worked flawlessly.  I've got all sorts of Genesis emulation on my main PC and in my cabinet, but there was something really satisfying about playing it on a TV with a controller.

IT MUST BE NES and SNES-STATION are nintendo emulators that I am going to fart around with tonight.

Other things to try...well, a lot of PS2 games are CD based so you can burn them on your cd burner, but you need to look into that yourself...

Hopethis helps!

It's ItMightBeNES...  And yes I've used that before on the PSX because that's what it's for.  I prefer NesterDC though, it looks cooler and has more/better options.

As for genesis and SNES, that's a good idea.  I think I'll test that out.

Yeah, you can pick up a DVD burner cheap now.  I paid like $250 for mine when I first got it.  Now you can get dual layer DVD burners for around $90 or so.  >:(  The media still isn't cheap though.

I've had good burns with Verbatim -DVD discs.  I've got a pile of +DVD of the same brand I got for Christmas, but haven't tried them yet.  All I know is my PS2 didn't like the cheapo brands.

Yeah!  ;D

Here's some fun stuff:

PS2Reality Player (MP3 player/Video player, I use it to watch XViD/DiVX movies/TV shows, etc)
PS2Mame
PS2Mame Working Game List (You'll need to register - free)

Only reason I even tried MAME games on the PS2 is that I've got a big TV attached to it, so it's worth it until I can get my cab built.

Dev.olution mode
- Ps2Reality Player can be loaded onto memory card, I've done it and it works.
- HDD Explorer
- PGen
- Here's instructions on how to burn and install all of the above.

Btw, as for DVD Burners, the Pioneer A07 is probably one of the best you can buy (I have it) and it's here for $84. Not bad. As long as you buy good media (Verbatim/anything manufactured in Japan, avoid Taiwan discs if you can) you'll avoid coasters. I've burned at least 50 discs with NO problem.
