Arcade Desktop
« on: July 22, 2004, 03:56:29 pm »
http://www.ojosverdes.com/test/AD.jpg

Well, here it is, almost finished, my arcade desktop, a design particularly conceived to enjoy MAME. It takes a lot of space in my room, but it's worthy. I wished maximum comfort to play arcades, so I decided I wanted a sit-down design. I also wanted something modular, not enclosed, so that I had freedom to set everything as I wished in every moment. So, I have a comfortable chair, a low table, and everything at hand: a brand new computer with win98 and ArcadeVGA displaying 320x224 via scart, a Dreamcast with RGB cable, home-build control panels, both the computer and the console plugged into a hi-fi, and both the controls and the video easily switchable (I've put all the controls together with psx extension cords). The tv is inclined and below the level of the desk inside a squared hole, but you can easily grab it and rotate it manually for vertical games. I have two optical mice, for MAME Analogue and a cute minikeyboard, so that it doesn't take much space. This is a more detailed description of the components I have:

AOPEN H500 CASE
PENTIUM 4 NORTHWOOD 2.8 @ 3.0 800 MHZ
ABIT AI-7 GURU MOTHERBOARD
512MBS KINGSTON DDR 400
ARCADEVGA GRAPHIC CARD
SEAGATE 40 GB 7200 HD
LG 52X CDROM
THOMSON 21' SCART TV
BENQ OPTICAL MINI MOUSE
LOGITECH MARBLE MOUSE
BENQ MINI KEYBOARD
SANYO HI-FI + TECHNICS SPEAKERS (250W)
2 HOME-BUILT ARCADE CONTROL PANELS (PSX PAD HACKS)
(ONE OF THEM IN THE PHOTO, AND A NAMCO ARCADE STICK)
2 PSX>PC CONTROLLER ADAPTORS (BOOM)
SEGA DREAMCAST
2 DREAMCAST CONTROLLERS
2 PSX>DC CONTROLLER ADAPTORS (MAGIC CONVERTOR)
SCART VIDEO SWITCH
4 PSX EXTENSION CORDS
SUBWOOFER (PENDING)

What is that plugged into the tower on the left side of the screen?

From left to right in this order: cpu tower, a usb mini keyb in front,  a Dreamcast, 2 psx>dc adaptors in front, the tv, the scart switch, 4 psx connectors (extension cords), and the hi-fi.

Ah yes, I see the keys now. At first glance I though it was some kind of mini flat monitor. Very nice set-up by the way!

I really recommend this keyboard to anyone with a cabinet. It's so slim and tiny that it fits anywhere. It's not wireless but that's an advantage for me, because I HATE wireless peripherals. It's usb and comes with a optical mini mouse, which is pretty confortable and works very well. Moreover the price of the pack is very nice. A photo:

What did you have to give for them?

That almost looks like a set that they carry at Walmart for $25/$30.  Been tempted to get it as it has a nice space saving design.

Yes, it's taken from the Capcom Desing Works artbook. I got it with emule. It's a very big scaned image at 300dpi. It's printed in a color laser printer. Above that and on the rest of walls I have more flyers and illustrations: Blood Money, Dragon Ninja, R-type, Prehistoric Isle, Salamander, Dragon Ball illustrations, Shadow of the Beast, Capcom vs SNK, Heavy Metal posters and flags... :D
