Adelaideans: who's going to the auction?
« on: July 15, 2004, 07:53:47 am »
Fellow Adelaideans,

Are any of you off to the Amusement Worx auction this Sunday? If so, anyone interested in meeting up? Can't say I've met any other cab fans before, but it may be fun ;)

It might also be an idea to meet up so that we don't outbid one another (assuming there is stuff worth bidding for, once the catalogue arrives), unless it can't be avoided (I won't be bidding on the Galaxian machine, that's for sure, as much as I'd like to...)

RetroBorg will definately be there, I'll also be heading to Magic Mountain on Wednesday for their auction as well. I just got the Amusement Worx auction list and lucky enough I have Friday off, so I'm heading down to see whats worth bidding on. ;D

I'll be there also..

Personally I just want one of the 25" LAI cabinets for my Golden Tee 2K board so don't bid against me ;)

I am dragging some of my mates along so if you see me, come up and say g'day - my name is Paul.

As for Magic Mountain - I heard on the news tonight that the auction was on Tuesday..??  But considering that 95% of the arcade machines are driving games and that now the whole of Adelaide knows it's on - the prices will be just stupid..  be good for a perve though.

I'll be the tall thin guy with the shaved head ;)

I didn't know that Magic Mountain was auctioning off stuff - thought that must have been done years ago. I agree - the prices will probably be stupid. Mind you, as much as I'd love a few driving games, I barely have space for the cocktail cabinet that I'm planning to build at presnt :P

(BTW - Peale, sorry about posting in the wrong forum *blush*)

Went down to Amusement Worx today to check out the merchandise,  no real classics but if the price is right I'll definately buy something. As far as Magic Mountain is concerned it's definately on Wednesday, with inspections on Tuesday.

Well, wasn't that a complete and utter joke..!!

For those that weren't there..   first up the machines were piled up so close that it was single file only - couple that together with the 400+ people that would of turned up and you had a complete shambles.

Then, after they realised that 400 people don't fit into a 30' x 30' room, they decided to move it out to the carpark..  then the PA system didnt work..

The cream though was people paying $3500+ for some crappy old pinball that were worn out, had bad play field wear and broken plastics etc etc...  hell, they had a $2500 reserve on a very tired Gorgar..!!

It wasnt all bad - I personally bought a 25" LAI cab for $425 which turns out to be the find of the century with an original Double Dragon board floating around inside that wasn't listed as part of the auction :)   Seems they might have been pushed for time getting all the cabs ready and forgot to install this board

The cab has a few problems with some cut wiring, but it should be sweet with a little work - a solid 9/10 all up once I give it a cleanup.

Anyone else find/buy anything??

No, I didn't get anything, although I am kicking myself a little that I didn't get one of the empty lowboys. Not too much, I add, as I still plan to make a cocktail cabinet first (shame that there weren't more of them). I didn't stay beyond the first hour because I was feely so seedy from last night :P

Yeah, it was ridiculously cramped - I certainly wasn't expecting so many people.

Yeah the auction was a bit of a shambles, first off and I think the biggest problem was the way they displayed the machines, the auction numbers were all over the place and it was very hard to find the machine you wanted to look at, why they didn't number the machines in order as you walked through I'll never know. Too many machines in too small an area, no way they were ever going to be able have the auction inside, it was hard enough inspecting the machines on Friday when I was one of 4 people looking around yet like Hoopstar said, have 400 people trying to cram in, I couldn't get in the door from the street at 11'o'clock when the auction was meant to start.  Also the back shed had no light and no power to any of the machines.

Moving the auction outside was their only option but unfortunately there was the PA problem early, cold weather and the odd shower.

The other problem I noted was if you were  paying by credit card there was a 1.5% surcharge on top of the auction price (including the addittion G.S.T. of course) there was no mention of this as far as I could see and saw one lady having a bit of a spit over this.

Anyway it was their first auction and I'm sure it will be much better next time, I will be emailling them with some constructive critisism.

I ended up purchasing lot 208 8 x14" brand new monitor tubes with 7 x monitor cases for $140.80 (inc G.S.T.), I only need one for my Galaxian cocktail cabinet but they weren't selling separately and I though I could sell the rest off.

I also bought lot 236 Brand new black low boy cabinet, never fitted out for $99 (inc G.S.T.), this will make my wife happy so I can now get rid of my 4 player mame cabinet that takes up too much room in the house.

My brother in-law bought lot 136 an empty driving simulator cabinet, ex Vitua Racing. No seat (single) for $55 (inc G.S.T.),.

Anyway, I'll be down at Magic Mountain on Wednesday hopefully they'll be less people and better bargains there.

I agree with you guys, the auction seemed a bit of a mess  :P.  I could barely even squeeze through the crowd to get to the pinball machines in the corner and it was hard to inspect any of the games properly.  I wasn't really interested in buying anything anyway, but I wanted to see how the auction process went and the sorts of prices people paid.  I think a lot of people there obviously didn't do their homework as they were paying $200-$400 more for machines which they could have walked into Amusement Worx 2 weeks before hand and picked up at the cheaper price!  Some people are just nutty.

Me and a friend played a bit on one of the machines, a NEO GEO system with some troopers sort of game in it, however the player 2 joystick was wired up back to front and so moved up when you pushed down and left when you pushed right.  LOL

I don't think the auctioneer had any idea of what he was selling  ;D  He seemed to like to think all the machines were worth like $4000.

Anyway, I'm sure they've learnt quite a bit from this one and so the next auction should be a lot better.  I'll have to start saving my pennies so I can actually bid on something next time...
