I have a 21" hitachi 802 and on first start, it flickers like a madman for like a minute or 2, then runs fine the rest of the day. What components would cause this behaviour? Could it be as simple as bad caps?

Yup, bad electrolytic caps or a bad solder joint on one of them. I say you've got some bad caps.

I guess I'll have to crack the case sooner than I planned on this thing. i was so dreading downgrading from the 21" back down to a 15"
I guess that will be motivation to fix it faster...
thanks ken!
