Video Amplifier ?
« on: July 07, 2004, 07:18:29 am »
Hi all

I have just received my ArcadeVGA from Andy @ Ultimarc, but now I have been reading on the forums that folk are using 'Video Amplifiers'.  In short I have a SCART TV, VGA>SCART cable and ArcadeVGA ...do I need 'any' other video hardware to get everything working correctly?...just want to make sure I have everything before I start.

Thanks a tonne guys, much appreciated!

Craig

The video amplifier was zapped into being because most older arcade monitors required more than the 1 volt running through the signal lines (or some crap like that). A standard telly is just like an arcade monitor minus the TV tuner, flashy box etc etc so it should behave in the same way as an arcade monitor (which does need the amp).

If you plug it in and your image is a wee bit too dark and fuzzy, then you need an amp.

Hope this confused you even more than you already were  ;D

Keep on gamin'
Now in a tasty new flavour.

Hello Craig.

I have the setup that you have which I use for testing. You won't need an amp with the ArcadeVGA if you are going in via the SCART socket. If your TV has more than 1 SCART socket then make sure that you connect to the correct one as normally it is only the first connection that will accept a RGB signal. Also make sure that you use the lower VGA connection on your card as you won't be able to display anything on your TV with the other. The display on your TV will be excellent, you won't notice any difference between that and a dedicated monitor.

Regards to all,

John.

Hi John

Thanks for that info...just curious why some are saying that it's needed while others say it's not.  Can anyone else say if they have run an ArcadeVGA through a SCART TV 'without' a video amp successfully ?

cheers for that John

i get perfect display using AVGA and scart connection without requiring a video amp. i think scart input signals are .7v pp so it is not required.

i bought an ultimarc amp "just in case" ...so if anyone wants one let me know.

A SCART tv that supports rgb, must support 0.7-1Vp-p as this is what standard consumer devices which output rgb use.The amplification is already done internally for you..
