AAARRG VW's stock cupholders are useless!!!
« on: July 07, 2004, 12:16:35 am »
I just came back from McD's and took a corner a little too sharply and my friggin medium dring went flying across the car and exploded when it hit the pasenger side door!

What the frig is the point of those things?  Do they honestly think the tallest cup you will be putting in them will be less than 6" tall?

I think I'm going to take them out to avoid the temptation of using them again and having this same thing happen again.
If there's bees in the trap I'm catching em
By the thorax and abdomen
And sanding the stingers down to a rough quill
Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again
In my land of pretend
I use bees as a mf'n pen

What kind of VW do you have?  I've got a 2000 Jetta.  My cupholders in the front are both broken.  The little arm that holds the cups in just hangs loose on both sides.  Also, they're the kind that tuck back into the dash behind this little plate to hide them.  Unfortunately, they randomly pop out from behind there, much to the surprise of my passengers.

Overall, I would be a happier person without my POS Jetta.

I don't think the cup holders are meant to be used during a "race". For that people normally drink through a tube that feeds into their helmet  ;D

I like how my Jetta rides, and I like all the features, but the reliability sucks hard.  My favorite site, other than this one, is www.myvwlemon.com.  I have had the power windows break on each door 2 times, CD changer shorted out and killed 3 head units, rotors went bad at 25k miles (and I'm a light braker), cupholders broke, cruise control light doesn't exist, armrest broke, check engine light comes on randomly, and it makes odd sounds when turning that can only be heard by people who don't work for VW.  Those are just the ones I can remember off the top of my head.

I have thought about trading it many times, but I can't find a car I actually like enough to start a new car payment for.  I nearly bought a truck, but I don't like how they ride enough to have one as an everyday vehicle.  I won't drive an SUV (well, maybe an Escape Hybrid).  I don't like BMW or Audi (Audi is just a VW with a slight makeover).  I have often considered the Mazda 6, as I had a 1993 626 from my senior year of high school until I bought the Jetta, and I liked it a lot.

Heh, the cupholders were the ONE part of my VW Passat that I really hated.  Clearly they were an afterthought tossed in for the American market.

cruise control light doesn't exist

Is there supposed to be a light?  If so, I don't have one either...

Overall, I'm extremely satisfied with my jetta.  Only problems I've had with it, other than the crappy cupholders of course, have been caused by me.  Like when I backed into a shopping cart and busted the drivers side mirror, which cost $60 for the replacement!!!  And when apparently I didn't quite get the gearshift into reverse and the car decided to take a trip accross the parking lot into another car.

I can't say that I'm not bias when it comes to VWs though, I've always been a big fan 'cept when it comes to bugs and golfs which I hate both.  I'm sure I can look past the cupholders and with my plans for a computer in the car with a touchscreen where the headunit sits now, I will definitly be removing the cupholders anyways.

When it comes to my next car choice I will have no problem getting another VW, infact I would get a Jetta GLI with the 2.8 in an instant and as a family man now, the Touareg is looking damn good to me know too...

The "medium" drinks from mc'ds in America are freaking HUGE anyway. It's practically a bucket.

Never mind what happens when you try and cram it into the cup holders - ever thought what happens when you cram that much sugary crap into your body?

Your VW did you a favour by spilling that drink man :-)

There are stores here where you can buy QUART and even 1/2 Gallon-sized plastic cups of soda.  Talk about self-indulgence.  This is one facet of American culture that I am not too proud of...

And they certainly won't fit into a cheezy VW cupholder!  Shoot - they really don't hold a nice 12oz coffee very well either.

What year is your Jetta?  I was happy with mine for the first year, maybe two, that I had it.  The second the warranty ran out, which was only 24k miles on the 2000's, everything started falling apart.  The worst part about owning the Jetta has been dealing with the dealership.  The one here in Richmond has got to be the most awful place in the world.  They tried to make me pay for a new head unit when the CD changer blew it out at 9k miles because it was a dealer-installed option, rather than direct from the factory.  I called VW corporate, who promptly called them and had them fix it.  Then, at 25k when the rotors went bad, I actually had to pay for that, even though they did my end of warranty service about a month earlier, and said everything was perfect.  There was a technical service bulletin that came out several months before that saying to check the rotors because they were failing prematurely.  I called VW corporate, and they beat the dealership over the head for that one and reimbursed my money.

Anyway, just keep an eye out on all the alerts about VW quality in the various consumer mags, Wall Street Journal, and such.  VW has gone downhill big time.  If that Jetta of yours is less than a couple of years old, I'd trade it in while it's still in one piece.

fwiw, i just got my check from VW for reimbursement for what they finally acknowledged (i'm sure the class action suit helped) was a defective clip that held up the windows and connected to the power window drive ...

both windows on my wifes previous jetta (1999?), and one window on the 2002 fell into the door...

I know I just like the pretty blue odomoter lights =)

I used to own a 1985 Golf.

I bought it new in October of 1985 and drove it for three years.  The only problem I ever had with was a bad fuel pump which was quickly replaced at no charge.

It did NOT have any upholders!

I passed it down to one of my sisters and she drove it for two years. She passed it on to my youngest sister and she drove it for two more years.  They never had any major problems with the car either.  It did seem to get hit quite a few times while my youngest sister drove it.
