Arcade Monitor and No ArcadeVGA
« on: July 05, 2004, 09:24:44 pm »
So I am a cheap bastich and was wanting to avoid spending the extra $$ to buy an ArcadeVGA and use my VooDoo Video card, a J-PAC and MON-ARC Plus program on my Jamma cabinent.

I read on the Ultimarc website about the J-PAC :
Custom microcontroller only allows sync signals to be sent to the monitor if they are in the correct range that the monitor is designed for. Avoids driving the monitor with a too-high horizontal sync rate which can damage some arcade monitors.

So with being said, If this Mon-Arc crashes or something my Monitor won't be damaged will it?

I plan on leaving the pc running most of the time, but, when I do fire it up, will I have to wait on the pc to boot up to avoid damaging the monitor or will the J-PAC take care of that too?

I think you could try checking out AdvanceMAME. It is designed for just this.

Is it possible to use MameWah with AdvanceMAME?

In answer to your original question "If this Mon-Arc crashes or something my Monitor won't be damaged will it?" the answer is no it will not be damaged.

The jpac will take any 15hz signal and dispaly it on your monitor (monarc or advancemae will be sending these signals)
If you send a 31khz signal to the jpac (from dos or windoes or if monarc/advancemame crashes) it will cut the signal in half (down to 15khz where it should be) and display that on your monitor. so you will get two identical pictures side by side on your arcade monitor - this will not do any harm.

So as far as damage to your arcade monitor goes you really can't go wrong with a jpac - 31khz signals will look crap but they won't do any harm. 15khz signals will be displayed as expected.

In answer to your question about mamewah - I do not know. have only ever used advancemame/menu

Advmame +  mamewah= works  ;D  i have it running downstairs as we speak.  be warned there are some version differences to be aware of with advmame particularly with how the game list is generated.  I used advmame .61 (I thinK) and it worked first try.  Check with how the version you are wanting to use, generates the listinfo and see if that is compatible with mamewah's method.
its better to not post and be thought a fool, then to whip out your keyboard and remove all doubt...
