is there a way to reduce screen flicker with light guns?

I finally got both running (oh yeah baby) but the screen flicker is VERY noticeable.  Has anyone discovered any settings on the monitor that will reduce the amount of flicker with each shot?
its better to not post and be thought a fool, then to whip out your keyboard and remove all doubt...

Without the flicker (white screen flash) the gun wouldn't be able to read the screen position.  You could try to turn down your contrast and brightness, but risk making the gun less accurate.  Maybe find a happy medium.
