PS2 emulators on TV and arcade monitor. Comparison.
« on: July 04, 2004, 03:11:57 pm »
Considering that Playstation 2 is the only console that can output proper low-resolution (256x240 and 320x240) and non-interlaced video mode...how would the picture quality compare to a arcade monitor (if you are using a s-video or component connection on PS2, hooked on a TV) ?

Talking about Genesis and SNES emulators only (since PS2 would never be able to run MAME well).

The picture would be exact the same ?

not great! s-video is best with a high quality cable, scart, or any RGB signal (arcade monitor) kicks it's butt no matter how low the quality of the cable is.

I was aware that the emulaiton scene on PS2 was pretty poor anyway, as Xbox is a much sweeter propostion for chipping and writting/porting homebrew software. I have both a chipped box and PS2 and have to say that xbox is the ultimate emulator. the high resolution output and processing power allow for some highly authentic looking emulation, buy no means perfect but very good, including an excellent MAME emulator and frontend.

I know, I have myself a xbox too. But the picture quality is not good enough for me, it can't output proper low-resolution, and picture that comes from the video converter receivers a lot of filtering. The result is a crap picture, far from what you can see on a real arcade monitor.
