No progress with MAME ANALOGUE :(
« on: June 29, 2004, 03:23:51 pm »
I have set multiplemice to 1 in the ini. I have 2 usb mice both working (controlling the same cursor) under win98. When I load a lightgun game in MAME Analogue with the hope of having 2 independent cursors, I have no control at all with any of my mice. Any idea what's wrong? I have mouse set to 1 in the ini too.

(damn my pages are old, gotta do something about that)

For lightgun games, win98, and multiple mice, the most reliable settings are:
mouse          1
multiplemice   1
lightgun       0
lightgun2a     0
lightgun2b     0

and probably
switchablemice 1

To test which physical has what number, the easiest is to start a game, go into Inputs (this game), and remap something to a mouse press.  You should get a couple mice's numbers, the non zero mouse number is that mouse's mouse number in analog+.  (Remap to normal by pressing enter then esc.)  Remember to remap the mouse buttons to the game buttons (ctrlr ini's are GREAT for this.)

With switchablemice enabled, there is a new menu item in mame's in-game UI, "Mouse Controls".  Go into there and set each player to the correct mouse.  (Instead, you can hand edit the cfg/*.ana game file, made after playing a mouse/lightgun/spinner/TB/360wheel game.)

Let me know if this doesn't help.  (Please, include the total number mice installed, directX version installed, and the noted above options settings.)

I already had those options set as you mention. I'm using Win98SE with a Benq USB mouse and a USB Logitech Optical Trackball. Both are detected in windows as HID Mouse. I have no special drivers installed. The version of DX is 8.1. Both mice control the windows mouse cursor. I'm testing with Zero Point 2. No movement of the cursor at all. When I define controls in input this game I can assing mouse 0 as fire (left button click). If I assing controls but with the other mouse it also writes mouse 0, which I think it means that both mice are recognized, but not separatelly. What I don't understand is why none of them move the cursor. I cannot see any menu called mouse controls.

BTW, thank you very much for your kind help.

On the tab menu, at the same level, you should see
"Input All Games"
"Input This Game"
and
"Mouse Controls"

If "Mouse Controls" is missing, either your general mame .ini file is not set right, or MAMEAnalog is not reading it.

UPDATE:  You also have to be in a game that originally used a Spinner, trackball, rotary joystick, or dial.

Drove me nuts that I wasn't getting the Mouse Controls menu in 19xx when I was trying to check this out for you.

Yes! That was it. I think I need a mame32.ini apart from mame.ini or viceversa (I don't remember now). The point is that now I have mouse enabled and the option mouse controls appears in the menu. I've tried games such as Ikari Warriors and yes! each mouse controls each player's rotation, so this works. However, I still cannot get any of my mice to work with lightgun games, which are my main interest. The crosshair simply doesn't move with any of my mice. Do I have to set the lightgun options in a particular way in the ini? I've been testing with no success. Is is possible to play these games with two players, each of them controlling his crosshair?

Yes.  Use the same settings as used in the other multiple mice games.

The lightgun options (in mame and mameAnalog+) are for special hardware inputs, not for lightgun games.

General rule:
Do not enable any lightgun setting unless you have a physical lightgun.
This means disabling lightgun settings for lightgun games played with a mouse or trackball.

Sometimes them enabled may work in some systems, but it's way better to leave them disabled unless absolutely needed.  Enabling them makes mame or analog+ do extra loops. Totally unneeded extra loops if you have a normal mouse.

I'm running Xp with an optipac and can't for the life of me get it to recognize the spinner.  Windows recognizes it, but analog mame doesn't--I have all the settings as above and am given the "mouse controls" menu--I tried switching player 1 through all five mouse settings but I can't get it to pick up the dial in the games controls menu.  Is there someplace else besides the INI where the mouse/dial is to be set?  shouldn't it just recognize it?  I think this might be related to my loss of direction on the rotary as well--anyone..help!
its better to not post and be thought a fool, then to whip out your keyboard and remove all doubt...

U_rebel...
Do you know if this holds true in reverse...namely, if you have a light gun, should you disable the mouse settings?  Any word on mameanalog v0.84u2?

Thanks,
Tim

I think so, but it might depend:

If you use mame's -lightgun option (in either mame or analog+), the reverse is true: don't enable the mouse when you enable lightgun.

If you enable analog+'s win9x multiple lightgun options (lightgun2a or lightgun2b), you shouldn't enable mice, also.

However, if you run winXP, I'm not as sure.  I think you don't need to (& shouldn't) enable mouse if you enable lightguns.  Can someone with XP test this? (Best if all four combos of mouse & lightgun options are tested.)  (Damn I need a new computer ;) )

Uh, not yet.   :-[  Let's see, excuses: New job :), longer commute :(, working on cab :), 0.84x has lots of core input changes (& analog+ is all about inputs)  :) :( :-\ [shrug].

I'm thinking maybe this weekend if I can fit it in, or maybe nothing until 0.85. :(

Windows XP:

Last time I tried (which was a while ago), in order to enable the lightgun in Windows XP you had to enable both mouse AND lightgun.  However, that was back in the old days before mameanalog and mameanalogxp were merged.
