Can you ever go too big with a tv?
« on: June 26, 2004, 09:55:49 pm »
Will a 32" tv distort the resolution of my future cabinet very much?  I know usually bigger is better, but I'm a bit worried about resolution.  Any one have much luck one about this size in the past?  The only reason I'm using it is because I have one sitting in front of me, that's too dark for most video games, movies, etc.  There arent any display options (really really odd...) So I figure the Radeon in my future MAME system can up the gamma and put it to some use (plus save me the cost of a tv).  Thanks for any advice you can offer.

what games do you play???

how far away will the monitor be???

I mostly play fighters and they look fine on the 32"hdtv in my showcase cab I built. Your real problem occurs with the games from the 80's.

on a similar note, I was playing galaga on a arcade monitor roughly the same size the other day.... mounted vertically.

When looking the enemies up top, my ship, at the bottom was not within my viewing span as I had to stand so close to the screen to control the sucker.  My head keep going up/down/up/down..... quite annoying actually.

IMHO anything over 25 (possibly 27 max) is not worth the cost or effort, unless it was going to be placed far in front of you like a sit down racing game or something.

You say it is too dark..  Have you tried adjusting all the controls on it?  Does it have on screen menus?  If so, there probably are hidden "service" menus that will let you turn up sub brightness or other controls, or inidividually addjust the drive or cutoff controls.  Google the net for "service menu" plus your TV model number or brand name and size.

If it doesnt have an on screen menu then there will be analog controls inside it just like arcade monitors to adjust to give it more brightness/etc..  A dark set is typically the sign of a tube starting to go out (does it have burn in on the pixels?), or it could be problems with the chassis as well.
