projection monitors?

Okay, how does the whole resolution issue play out with projection monitors?  I have a deluxe vf2 cabinet, with the 50" projection screen, that I'm seriously thinking of converting to MAME.  I keep seeing in all the FAQs disclaimers that say the issues only relate to CRT monitors... how does one gauge a projection screen in this case?  I know the monitor can obviously handle 25khz... but I can't find a manual ANYWHERE.

what model screen you got ? I have a 50" megalo cab with Hitachi screen, with an arcade VGA and J-Pac, I got BIOS of my PC running fine, but when it booted to windows it lost sync and couldnt get it back, I never tried any dos based MAME so couldnt comment on them,

I can have a stable Windows picture if I use a scan convertor but quality isnt too good unless your playing games,

It's a Mitsubishi, from a Sega Model 2 cab.  I don't remember the model #, can get it tonight.  I have tried everywhere to get the manual.  Even Mistubishi says they have no record of it... and the remote is in Japanese.

Yes, the pedestal is shaped differently as is the marquee, but it is a LOT like that.  In fact that white wooden housing looks very close from what I can see.

Its exactly the same as a crt because it is a crt. Some of these actually use tvs. 3 crt guns shoot at a screen. How are you so sure its at 25khz. If its a converted tv its probably running at 15khz. Virtua fighter 2 can be set up to run at 15khz.

Actually, it's three projectors that shoot at a mirror that reflects 45 degrees to the screen.  I've seen it, having taken the screen off to clean the projector lenses.  The lenses are probably an inch and a half in diameter.  They had about that much in dust on them, too, when I got the cabinet.

I didn't know about VF2 being able to run in 15khz... perhaps that is the saving grace I'm needing here.  I really need a VF2 manual, I guess, since the monitor manual seems to be vaporware at this point.

EDIT:  Okay, found the service manual here.  On page 21 it mentions a DISPLAY TYPE setting that can be set to either CRT or Projector.  Could this be a 15-25khz switch on the game board?  What other possible purpose could that be?  If you're right, and the projection monitors are just projection TVs converted for RGB input, it would make sense that this setting would be for telling the board it's working with a 15khz monitor.

Or am I just thinking wishfully?

well, with my 50" screen its inputs are BNC for RGBS , they come from what looks to be a scan convertor of some sorts that is inside my cab and wired to the jamma wiring loom
my Megalo plays 15/24khz but I think alot of it is the 'scan convertor' or whatever it is is upping a 15khz signal to 24khz

to my knowledge, VF2 is 24khz only and needs a medium resolution monitor

An on board scan converter... hrm... I'll have to have a look.  I haven't had time to look in that cab in a long time.  If there in fact is one, and I can tap into it... that would solve my problem as well, using an ArcadeVGA to input to the scan converter.

If this is the case, though, what is the purpose of the DISPLAY TYPE setting?

Actually that's not the case ...

VF2 comes in two favors .... standard and medium resolution (It's either one or the other ... not both)

It's simple ... take your VF2 board and plug it into a normal cabinet with a CGA monitor ... if you get a pic your good to go

If you don't get a pic but just sound ... your VF2 Deluxe cabinet has a medium res. monitor.

I would love to test it for you with my Sega Model 2 JAMMA adapter

There is.  It's a Mitsubishi VS-50SE1.  I've spent hours upon hours searching the web for references and come up empty.  I've searched Mitsubishi and Sega's websites.  I called Mitusbishi's display support line and they say that model # doesn't exist.  The remote control is in Japanese.

Basically, at this point, I think I'm going to set up a simple box with AdvanceMAME so I can try it at both 15khz and 25khz to find out once and for all.
