D's Cab's..
« on: June 21, 2004, 11:07:38 pm »
Okie,  well  I've been reading this forum and website for awhile now and found it the MOST helpfull place on the web...     I've not posted here much,  but since I've been playing with my new dig cam tonight I figured I'd post a couple of pics.

This one is my cocktail cab.  It was the first machine I ever built or worked on.   I got the cab for free from a local operator.  It was gutted when I got it.  It appeared to be some sort of gambling type game(?).  What I liked about it was the very small footprint it has, when not in use, it sits up against the wall and takes very little space.  The only drawback to it's small-ish size is the best monitor I can get into it is a 15". (but I'm working on how to stuff a 17" in it now)

There were no CP's on it like there are now,  I made those, the sticks and buttons were salvaged from another operators pile of spare parts.  The original controls appear to have been nothing more than a row of 4 buttons on each side where the recesses are.  I covered over the holes with plexi painted black on the backside.

I used an AMD 1.0ghz setup, cheap onboard vid and sound and an Ipac.  Audio supplied by a Realistic car amp and a pair of Jensen speakers.  OS is a stipped down Win98 running the command line version of Mame,  and ratz, I forget which FE I used.

The original coin mech was missing and appeared to be nothing more than a single slot in the wood door.  I added the working and wired coin door (also from the scrap heap) to make it look more like a real arcade machine.

Here's my projects since then:

A legit, Original "Spy Hunter".  Saved from the scrap pile and mostly restored.   All I have left really is the side art.   I reworked the monitor, power supply, fixed a hunk of bad connections and it worked !!!   the whole front has been cleaned/painted as needed.  The CP came out super.

The Mortal Kombat I got as-is, working.   I snagged it mostly for the cab, but the kids have so much fun with it I couldn't bring myself to mame it.    It's a Jamma cab,  and I've a few Jamma boards around, so I'll be leaving it and just switch boards when the mood strikes. (I recently grabbed a Neo-Geo Jamma board and some carts for it, Metal Slug in a MK cab anyone?)

The Pole Position cab was also dead when I got it.  P/S smoked and board edge connector burned up.   Fixed all of that, got it runnind and found out it had the ROM upgrade to P-P 2 !!    So I swapped out the marquee,  changed CP's (the one that was on it was trashed) and cleaned...  cleaned ...  cleaned...
It still needs a monitor,  it's badly burnt and the chassis needs a kit anyway.  I do have a perfect bezel glass, but it's out so I can swap monitors.

So that's the stuff in the game room..  there's more projects in the garage.

I'll be upping some better pics to some web space  withing the next week or two in case anybody wants a closer look.

I'd like to close by saying thanks to all the excellent folks here,  it's the info you all provide that allowed me to accomplish this..

 :)

Regards,
D
