OK, the default IPAC settings SUCK!
« on: June 20, 2004, 07:28:59 am »
Ok, so I have had the defaults in my cab for a while. The worst is someone playing a game like 1943, or any other game that you push the joystick into the up position a lot (verticals), and then the guy dies and presses the Player One Start button. So, what does this do? It brings up the Volume/gamma/whatever for mame. and people dont understand and start hitting buttons and moving the joystick all over the place, making more problems for me!

I hate it! This example is the most common in my experience. I HATE IT!

Another one is people that start hitting the 5 and 6 buttons (while in MAMEWAH) for coins, before they are in the game! WTF? and this is a problem for MAMEWAH as it cycles lists and it screws everthing up!

MY GOD! I am having tons of problems with MAME, IPAC, and MAMEWAH! Someone needs to tell me a solution to this for a cab where people can just walk up and play and NOT F**k it all up.

Cant they think of any better buttons to use? WTH!? Man, this needs to change ASAP! I am tired of it getting all screwed up on me every night!

Please, someone tell me what to do!

do you need the shift functions?  if not, disable it and reprogram the ipac.  Remember that you have to set the jumper to ALT on the ipac to do have you're preferred config.

If you don't like the MAME settings, set up your own.  Make an instruction sheet for people who play your cab. Tell them personally that this does that, etc.  Or, if you hate it so much, don't let anyone else use your cab.  I don't see why you're getting so upset over this.  Frustrating?.... yes... but calm down.  Set a new shift key, make a dedicated shift key, disable them altogether.

And simply make fun of people who hit coin while in MameWah... wth are they doing?  I wouldn't let anyone like that near my cab, that's for sure.
first off your and idiot

Agreed.....  Since the world's smallest violin is in the shop perhaps you need to suck it up and quit complaining.  Mamewah's keys are remappable, mame's keys are remappable and the ipac's keycodes are remappable.  Your a smart boy, figure it out... sheesh!

OK. OK. I'm sorry. I was posting it a moment after someone hit 2 was in mamewah and kept hitting buttons, changed emulators, chaged lists, changed emulators name to 1111112211121212112 and so on..
IT IS FRUSTRATING!  :(

Anyway, I will look into locking mamewah and changing the IPAC keys. They are the main problem really.

Thanks for your ideas and opinions and setting me straight.

CHEERS!  ;D

Oh, and yeah it is ridiculous when they try to coinup in mamewah. then they go "i hit coin and all the games disappeared!"  Yikes! So i go back in and put it back to the proper list.

For MAMEWAH just hold in '2' for 3 seconds...it will 'disable' the setup menu.  Just hold in in again to enable.

I have been struggling with the 'shift' feature as well...it works fine for ME...but friends...well, friends are idiots and have no idea what is going on...they like to press buttons...repeatedly  ::)
As stated, you may not even need it, but if you're like me and enjoy doubling your cp button capablities, just make a dedicated shift button, and hide it under/behind the cp.  This way, you can make ALL the 'emulator/front-end' keys shifted buttons, so your friends can't use them...unless they find the magic button.  Even if they do, it does nothing on it's own.

Instruction card is a must if you want people to plug and play.  I need to make one myself...it's just I don't really have a lot of room with a 27" monitor.  What do I do, staple it to the marquee?  Make it a kick plate?  Hehe.  There is a bit of room right below the screen and above the cp.

And for the coins, disable the buttons and make them pay   ;)
"I put a quarter in and the games disapeared!"
"Aww, that's too bad...you have to put 5 more in to get back to the game list"  ;D
...they only live twice!...

I use ALT IPAC key settings.  I have disabled (almost) ALL of the shift functions, even tho I have a dedicated pause/shift button.  The only shift function I have is Pause+P1 Start=Quit.

IMO the worst thing about the standard setup is P1 Start+P2 Start=Quit - that's happened to me a lot by accident...

You could change the keys to cycle emulator/list in MAMEWAH to something less likely to be hit...

For the most part the IPAC default keys are based on the default MAME keys, so you can't blame IPAC too much.  I did re-assign the shift key to avoid some problems.

I am using Kymeara for a front end because it has the most flexibility when it comes to remapping keys.

I did run into a problem this weekend.  I was playing a two player fighting game(Armored Warriors) with my youngest brother nad all of a sudden the screen went blak for a second, and the came back rotated 180 degrees! WTF!  Exit to Kymaera and it is rotated as well.  Exit to windows and it is also rotated.

I did some quick checking and found that the driver for my ATI Radeon has hot keys for rotating the screen.  Ctl-Alt-R was the default for "Toggle 180 degrees".

I disabled that feature, but I am going to follow a sugesstion that I had seen elsewhere on this board and remap my keys so that none of the player controls use Alt, Ctl, or Shift.  I think it was Sir Poonga that mentioned this.

Real Life.  Still a poor substitute for video games!
