MAMEWAH & TRACKBALL QUESTION
« on: June 18, 2004, 08:16:09 am »
I hope someone can advise me here:

i have disassembled my PC as i build because i was playing games instead of building the cab........ no PC means building quicker.

ANYWAY - i have bought a 3" happ trackball and an optipac..... but the happ trackball had a usb plug - so it worked fine with mame32 for the trackball games.

So - i sold the optipac on ebay as i decided it wasnt needed.

Now iev been thinking - i switched on the trackball to work as a mouse within mame32. Now i want to use Mamewah for that for authentic feel - will my USB trackball work ok, or do i now need my optipac back to make it work?

I dont want to setup my pc to find out as i will start gaming again.

Anyones help is very much appreciated!!

You need to set 'mouse 1' in your mame.ini file to use the trackball *in MAME*.  This is the equiv of ticking the mouse box in MAME32.

Think of MAME32 of an emulator (which happens to have a built-in FE), rather than a FE - if it works in MAME32 it will work in MAME.

You cannot use the trackball to control MAMEWAH itself atm, but watch this space ;)

I'll be happy with just the mouse support.  JoytoKey works fine for me right now.  I just dropped gobs of money on a trackball though and I want to be able to use it. 8)

So I assume to be able to scroll with a Mouse/Trackball, a scroll bar will be on the left of the rom list.

Also, will you be able to quickly jump to a section by pressing the 1st letter of the rom name?  Ex: G - jumps to the 1st G rom.

I've been using MAMEWAH for a week after using MAME32 for 3 years.  And I just love MAMEWAH!!  Great Work!!

1) No, there is no scroll bar (you'r too used to MAME32!) - just roll the trackball or spin the spinner and the list scrolls just like using the joystick...except you can control the speed too.

2) No, no-one uses keyboards ;)  In case you don't know you can use the P2 stick (by default) to move 100/500 games.  There have been (good) suggestions to improve this, such as move to previous / next letter etc., I don't plan to alter it for the next release tho.

3) Great, glad you made the move! :)

Grrr, I haven't posted much in ages, but this was worth posting for...I want the mouse support you TEASE!!!!

That would be so nice when you have a full collection to scroll through and want more finite controle than 100/500 or 1/25 (or whatever the p1 l/r is)

Well I've been trying to work on it tonight...Englands usual gripping-hair-tearing-nail-biting-damn-I-hate-watching-England-play-football game hampered progress somewhat...

But I have joystick support working, needs some tidying up yet, then I will release it.  Then I'm thinking about doing a massive input code re-write, to make it really flexible - as flexible as MAME if all goes well :)  Now is the time if anyone has any has any input-related requests...

My hope is for trackball support (mouse) with one button start, and possibly one button page up or down.

Trackball/Mouse support.

That would be huge.

I can already imagine slamming the trackball and have it scroll through and slowly come to a stop on my next randomly selected game!

I was just wondering if you tested MAMEWAH with 2 mice.  I have a ps2 betson trackball and a usb spinner.  I've been playing with kymera cause I love the mouse scroll on it.  But it was giving me problems with the spinner.  I would like to be able to use both mouse and spinner to control the list.

You asked about input suggestions... there you go.

And thanks for the great work.

Assuming they both control the Windows mouse pointer (I guess so), then they will both work in MW.  ATM you can only specify one axis to use, so if your spinner is on the x-axis, you would have to set it up for that, and use left/right (not up/down) on your trackball.  That said I can easily add the option to use either axis.

I won't have it done for a little while...I started work on a new fully customised input system which has a way to go yet.  I might not implement it in the next version, but I want to keep working on it for a while, since it is pretty interesting :)

One thing I would add to his would be to have the game list loop if you hit the bottom.

I know right now when I hit the bottom of my list I have to scroll all the way back up if I want to get to the top (instead of just going down one more to get to the top of the list.

Not a *huge* deal but would make the trackball selector that much better (wouldnt hurt to allow the same thing in the options menu either)

OK I will add the list wrap option (not neccessarily next release, this can just be an option which shouldn't be too tricky to add).

The Select Game List hotkey sounds good, also I will add Select Emulator hotkey.  The system I am working on should make it easy to add hotkey events in the future, but any others while I'm at it?...

I've been putting a lot of work into the new input system (still outside of MW for now).  If you don't know how to use MAME's ctrlr ini files then nows the time to learn...MAMEWAH's new system is *very* similar.

It's gonna take me a little while to finish the system off, and then transplant it into MAMEWAH, but it will be worth it :)
