Playstation2 to VGA?
« on: June 16, 2004, 05:13:43 pm »
There was a post about this a couple of weeks ago but I believe it went by the wayside.  Has anyone had any luck with getting a playstation2 to run on a VGA monitor?  I would love to be able to play VF4: Evo on my cab.

PS2 doesnt output vga, certain games does. You might wanna try this one, pretty sure it will work fine as long as you are playing whatever games support vga(tekken 4 for instance).

Well that looks interesting.  I've seen a couple of things like that but I don't know anyone who has any first hand experience with one.

Also, I'm not really looking for any greater video output just really a way to play full screen PS2 games on a VGA Monitor.

i plan on buying this soon, at 100$ its a little pricey but its from a "real" site, not some cheap thing off ebay. if it doesnt work for some reason i have a buisness to complain at. It looks very high quality though and im pretty sure it will work. im buying it mainly for fighting games/music games to be played on my cab. my birthday is in a couple weeks so ill probably have to wait to order it with some birthday money. my car is eating all my money lately

I saw one of those in a catalog a couple of days ago.  I wonder how well they work.  If you get or hear of anyone getting one post up about it and If I get one I'll do the same.

I don't see any support for Component input...and if thats the case it isn't going to be all that great.  Idealy what you want is an upscanner that takes component input (like the XRGB2+).

im not sure if this is what youre talking about but on my monitor, the input that goes into the back of it are 5 small connectors, and on the other end if the standard monitor cable. most monitors ive seen have the monitor cable on both ends.

so would this matter for me?

I think he's talking about how good the picture is going to be.  You would want the best possible singal running from the PS2 to the monitor which would be component Red Green and Blue wires.  That vga thing we were talking about doesn't offer component.  The best input it has is s-video which may or may not look too hot on a vga monitor.  Guess somebody will have to bite the bullet and try one of these things.

i ended up buying this http://www.lik-sang.com/info.php?category=219&products_id=3235&

since it was at the same site i ordered my game from. i hooked it up today and the picture is great and it works fine! i was kinda scared cause so many VGA converters people have been saying are crap but this one is really good and for 50$ you cant go wrong. im using S-video with PS2 and it looks good, and this box will support other systems also i havent tried DC yet but i will soon

As long as it looks good to you, thats all that matters in the end.  S-Video upscanning is much better than composite, but component upscanning (or RGB) is best quality wise.

Cool.  How was the shipping?  I've heard lik-sang can be kinda pricey on shipping.

I was going to go this route but 27 inch component TV's are so cheap these days. I want the best picture possible and since I'm playing component now I'd probably be disappointed in the output going into my Wells D9200 arcade monitor.  I picked up a nice flat screen 27 inch component TV and it looks as good as it did in the arcade. This of course is for a dedicated Benami PS2 cabinet (Pop N Music1-9 + Best Hits), (DDR 1-7th + Extreme), and (Beatmania IIDX 3rd-7th).

All the PNM PS2 games are amazing. I would without a doubt pick up 8th, 7th (in that order). I think 8th is the best of them. If you want the older songs from 1-6th pick up Best Hits. I still recommend getting 6th mix on it's own though...great songs on there. as for 1-5th you can find them pretty cheap sometimes. BH doesn't cover every great song and there are many that you will miss but few and far between.

how much was your TV btw? honestly the VGA conversion isnt perfect, but for the price i think its the best youre gonna get, ive noticed it doesnt like the color red, anything red will have a very slight blurryness around it, but thats the only flaw. I chose a PC monitor when i was a newb cause of the easy mating with the PC, but then again i also planned on having a console cab and a MAME cab.... but whatever

To connect my Hantarex Polostar arcade monitor to my consoles I use the Micomsoft XSelect D4. This neat little box has multiple inputs selectable by remote control. It can transcode between VGA and component. It is perfect for arcade monitor usage as 525i is transcoded to 15kHz RGBHV, while 525p is trancoded to 31kHz RGBHV. This means it does not do upscanning, so the display will always look authentic. And trust me, you don't want the blurring and color bleed associated with upscanning.

Inputs:
1 x VGA (31kHz only)
3 x component video
1 x 21-pin RGB (15kHz only)

outputs:
1 x VGA (15kHz for 525i and 31kHz for 525p)
1 x component video

Someone mentioned the upscanning solution. I would stay away from those $50 upscanning boxes. They are low-quality devices that dispay a lot of quality bleed and at best have S-video inputs. I was not impressed with them.
