Anyone else accused of being obsessive compulsive?
« on: June 15, 2004, 11:01:49 pm »
I hope I spelled that right....

My wife seems to think I could be. It seems that anytime I get something in my mind, it almost consumes me.

I'll be thinking about it driving down the road, eating, going to sleep, etc.

I.E. building a cabinent, how I am gonna hook everything up and so forth.

Surely I'm not the only one, am I?

I was going to reply earlier, but I had only washed my hands 74 of the required 187 times to remove the germs......what would define obsessive compulsive?
You’re always in control of your behavior. Sometimes you just control yourself
in ways that you later wish you hadn’t

Maybe something like washing your hands no less than 200 times, if I were you I wouldn't worry about anything if you're just doing it 187 times. Thats nothing

yep.  Same thing here.  That's why I didn't start drinking until I was 26 and still won't go to a casino.  I don't drink that often cuz I don't really like it THAT much.

If I went to a casino and had a good time...I'd be addicted in no time.  bad news from what I hear on the radio.   Well the radio sounds like this "come here and win all the money in the world and have the time of your life doing it!"  Then in a real quite sinister voice "please gamble responsibly.  gambling problem?  call 1888 bets off. "  yeah...no thanks.  When they tell you right on the box that you could get addicted to it...that's a bad sign.

That's why Doom was released online at first.  No box to put a lable on.  Now I'm addicted to video games.

oh well.  I gotta get back to being consumed by everything in the world that's not important to anyone but me.  oh, and some of you guys.  ;)

No OCD here, though I'd probably be diagnosed as having adult attention deficit disorder.

I got drunk for the first time around 14, and gambled in a casino for the first time at 17. I can't say I ever developed a taste for either, though I've had a few good times doing both. ;)

Biggest thing I've learned about casinos is to go in with the mindset that I'll have fun loosing whatever amount I've decided to risk. Anything I've won is kept separate from that initial stake, and when it's gone, I'm done. Last thing, watch you're drinking while there, casino drinks usually have extra bite and you can get plastered in short order.

The DSM IV diagnostic criteria for OCD:
A. Either obsessions or compulsions:

Obsessions as defined by (1), (2), (3), and (4):

               1. recurrent and persistent thoughts, impulses, or images that are experienced, at some time during the disturbance, as intrusive and inappropriate and that cause marked anxiety or distress
               2. the thoughts, impulses, or images are not simply excessive worries about real-life problems
               3. the person attempts to ignore or suppress such thoughts, impulses, or images, or to neutralize them with some other thought or action
               4. the person recognizes that the obsessional thoughts, impulses, or images are a product of his or her own mind (not imposed from without as in thought insertion)

Compulsions as defined by (1) and (2):

               1. repetitive behaviors (e.g., hand washing, ordering, checking) or mental acts (e.g., praying, counting, repeating words silently) that the person feels driven to perform in response to an obsession, or according to rules that must be applied rigidly
               2. the behaviors or mental acts are aimed at preventing or reducing distress or preventing some dreaded event or situation; however, these behaviors or mental acts either are not connected in a realistic way with what they are designed to neutralize or prevent or are clearly excessive

B.  At some point during the course of the disorder, the person has recognized that the obsessions or compulsions are excessive or unreasonable. Note: This does not apply to children.
C.  The obsessions or compulsions cause marked distress, are time consuming (take more than 1 hour a day), or significantly interfere with the person

I do have OCD. I was diagnosed as having tendancies when I was 8 (I think. I was Young), and I was fully diagnosed 3 years ago, when I was 13. I take medicine for it, and it sort of wanes. But, I am lucky that I don't have one of the worse cases. Mines just kind of annoying things. But, I do get really anxious if I don't go through with them. One is locking all the locks in my house. Another is wiggling my feet at every start and end of a driveway (this is only when I'm in a car).

Well then, Im done boring all of you.

So,what happens if you don't do it? Wiggling your feet?

I wasn't really serious about having it. I was just saying that sometimes this ( or any other of my hobbies) sometimes will consume everything that I do.

I don't think OCD is something to joke about. It often can be coupled with suicidal tendencies, severe depression, etc. I know a person who I am very close with who is also on meds for OCD. It is upsetting to watch them eat themselves alive over seemingly little things.

You don't try and push your arcade thoughts out of your life because they are causing you harm. You are using them to distract you from the monoteny (sp?) that is life.

You are certainly not the only one.  I am often 'in space' pondering the nuances of my current project to the point where my family gets seriously annoyed by my lack of attention.  I am so deeply in thought that I often don't hear when I am being spoken to.

And there is always a new project.  Arcade Cabs, Tokens, TiVo hacking, building PCs, Ham Radio, Electronics projects, etc.

The interesting part is that I have zero ability to ponder those things that simply do not interest me.  If it doesn't interest me, I cannot keep my mind on it for more than a few seconds, and am very easily distracted.

My wife and kids should get medals for putting up with me!

I would say that we are obsessive, but that it does not go as far as being a disorder.

Usually I go crazy, and start wondering about whether or not I should do it, and then start over-analyzing everything...

I don't really care if people around me joke about it. I actually do have sucidal tendancies, but I dont care if ppl joke about that either. Lifes to short to ---smurfette--- about the little things. The meds that I actualy take is Paxil :p

I go through swings where I focus all of my spare brain cycles on a project.  I overdesign and overdesign and overdesign on it like mad.  It has the added benefit that I run into far fewer problems when I actually get around to building.  But the drawback is that I sometimes decide that a particular thing is not going to work, and I start to suffer from design paralysis.

Movin' to the country,
gonna eat a lot of peaches
Movin' to the country,
Gonna eat me a lot of peaches
Movin' to the country,
gonna eat a lot of peaches
Movin' to the country,
gonna eat a lot of peaches

Peaches come from a can,
they were put there by a man
In a factory downtown
If I had my little way,
I'd eat peaches every day
Sun-soakin' bulges in the shade

Take a little naps where the roots all twist
Squished a rotten peach in my fist
And dreamed about you, woman,
I poked my finger down inside
Make a little room for it to hide
Nature's candy in my hand or can or a pie

Millions of peaches, peaches for me
Millions of peaches, peaches for free

Look out!
