HELP!! Adobe Photoshop question??? Merging pictures??
« on: June 14, 2004, 11:06:22 pm »
I have a poster that I've scanned in 3 pieces. I'm hoping to use the image as a marquee. I've downloaded the tryout version of Photoshop and I've been trying to figure out how to seemlessly merge the three images into one. Once that is done I am going to resize it to fit the marquee and get it printed. Can someone give me a little guidance as to how to put these three images together?

The three images are roughly 8"x11" at 200 dpi. I am hoping to combine the three and resize them to roughly 24"x8". HELLLLLP!!!

 ???

There are many ways to do things in photoshop.  Here is one way to get the 3 images into one image with each image as a layer.

1) Open the three original images in photoshop.

2) Go to File -> New.  Make the canvas 24" x 8" x 200 DPI

3) Go back to the original image 1 window in photoshop.  Press "Control + A" to select the entire image.  Press "Control + C" to copy the image.  Now go back to the blank new canvas and press "Control + V" to paste the image.

4) Repeat 3 for image 2 and image 3.

5) Now you should have 3 layers in the destination image.  Move the images around by selecting the black arrow (shortcut: V)  and the layer which you want to move.  Then just click and drag or use the arrow keys to place it.

Hope that helped.  Good Luck!

there are also stitching functions ect... but they don't always do a good job.  I would rather do it manually.

It's a tad more complicated than simply dragging the three pieces over to the same canvas though.  You'll need to use the transform tools to rotate it slightly so that it matches up just perfectly.  Simply right click on the piece you wish to alter and select that layer.   You can drag the layer by simply, well dragging it.  If it needs rotated in the file menu it's under edit/transform/rotate.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the help fellas but after trying all this stuff out I wasn't too pleased with how it looked. It wasn't seemless and the colors varied from pic to pic. After fooling around with Photoshop I just went ahead and made my own from scratch. Thanks though!!

You may want to consider vectorizing the scanned images once they are combined.  Check out Frosty's guide.  Vectorizing takes some time to do but it is not that difficult.  If you vectorize it, you will end up with a very high quality printable image.  Note: Not all images are suitable for vectors.
