Ever heard if an NES putting out to high of an output?
« on: June 13, 2004, 06:05:37 pm »
Has anyone ever heard of an NES putting out the wrong frequencies or too high of an output for a normal TV???
I'm just wondering because I think that somehow this NES that I bought off of ebay shorted out my tv's sound for the coax input.  I've had the TV for about 5 years, so normally I would just think that it's time to buy a new TV, but when I plug the NES in with RCA's there was a buzzing sound that was bad enough to make me turn the sound off (kinda funny how now I can't use sound with either of the NES outputs, huh?).  The sound still works when you have it on the Video1 setting (ie RCA jacks, Svideo input).
The only thing that I can think of is that the sound on the NES is bad.  I mean, normally it shouldn't matter if the power is too low on the outputs, because that should just make you have to turn it up louder, but the buzzing sound is common for a signal with too much wattage for the reciever to handle.  There was no buzzing through the rf box, which is why I WAS using it till this.
Should I be blaming this on the NES and worry about it killing another TV, or do you guys think it's just that the TV has had a good run and needs laid to rest...?

As an avid NES collector (with over 600 NES games) I can tell you, of the dozens of NES systems that went through my hands.. this is the first time I've heard of it.

The only problem you should look for when it comes to the RCA plugs on the NES is the plugs.  Make sure VIDEO is connected to VIDEO and AUDIO is connected to the correct RCA audio port.

NES is mono only.. it outputs audio on only 1 side.  Most TV's accept mono input, but they require it to be connected to a certain side.  Read your manual to find out if it's the left or the right.

well, to be honest...I've never heard of a TV doing this either.  Like I said, I have sound, but only through the RCA jacks.  I've heard of it going the other way around because of the RCA jacks going bad, but this is the first that I've ever heard of audio only PARTIALLY going out...
Then again it is two seperate inputs and all...UGGGH!!!
I just fear that the NES is the culprit, because it was the last thing that I used on the coax before the sound went out.  And the fact that I haven't had the NES very long, mixed with the RCA jack problems...well...yah.  I haven't had ANY problems with this TV in the 5 years that I've had it, so it kinda sucks that things are starting to go wrong with it now...
Then again, 5 years for a recently made TV is actually about right...I heard the expected lifespan on all TVs made since 1990 is supposed to be a 7 year average...

It could very well be your tuner in the TV.  This happens a lot on some older TVs.  I bet you have some channels that have become fuzzy lately too.  Have you had any storms lately?  Cable or Satellite?

I run off of cable, but it's digital cable, so the tuner box would have taken the shock before my TV would have if it came through there.  And no, I don't have any static on channels, it's JUST the sound on JUST the coax input.  It's okay though...nothing a good rewiring job won't fix.  And if I set it up right, which won't be hard, then I'll be able to know for sure if it's the NES if something else goes wrong.  I will mess around to see if somehow my game switch box was trying to output stereo instead of mono though, I never really thought of that till it was mentioned on here.
