Has anybody ever swapped an NES game battery!?
« on: June 13, 2004, 04:41:46 am »
Read above, answer below.  ;D  I bought Zelda off of ebay for a few grains of dirt, gave the guy good feedback cause it worked...BUT THE BATTERY IS DEAD SO IT WON'T KEEP A SAVE!!!   :'(
Has anybody ever performed this surgery???  If it doesn't work then I'm not gonna waste my time, because the battery is soldered to the connectors that are soldered to the gameboard...you know, the footbone's connected to the jawbone...........wait, I'm losing myself.
HELP!!!!!!!!!
The default personal text is is "I'm a llama!"???  I guess that makes me an emperor with a new a groove.

Hey I had to do the same thing to a zelda gameboy cart. It's not very hard at all. The only tricky part is removing the original battery it is spot welded. Using a jewlers flat bladed screwdriver you can lift off the metal piece. To pop off the spot welds. Try not to damage the metal holder as you can use it with the new battery. You can solder the clip to the new battery but you have to be quick. You don't want to heat the battery too much.
Curls in the squat rack !?!?!

A jewler's screwdriver?  Hmmm...guess I'm gonna have to go shopping...  Just what I needed, another excuse to spend money!!!
Thanks though, my biggest concern was that it just wouldn't work in general (for all I know they had the cart set up to use ONLY that battery or something goofy like that).  I'll jump back on here if I blow up the battery or something, just so you can laugh at my misery.

For a regular NES cart you need a special screwdriver head.  It's called a security bit or something.  A jewler's screwdriver won't do it.

Do a Google search for "REPLACING NES BATTERY".  Here's the first I got with 'I Feel Lucky":

I would prefer to find a holder for the lithium battery.. but can't seem to find it anywhere!  Does anyone know where it can be purchased online? (you know.. the same black holders that are soldered to most modern PC motherboards).

Well, I couldn't find a jewler's screwdriver (but granted, I only looked at Lowe's and Wally World)...Instead I popped the old one loose with a razor blade.  I used the slots on the opposite side of the blade, the ones that normally hold the blade into a knife.  I worked it in far enough around the solder points and then twisted it up.  The top worked perfectly doing that, but the bottom gave me a bit of trouble on the last one.
It's not the tools you used, but the method of your madness that gets the job done.
