Average BYOAC users age..
« on: June 12, 2004, 11:47:08 am »
I am very interested what the average MAME/BYOAC user would be..

It seems to me that a fair percentage would be in their late 20's - early 30's with games like pacman and galaxian being so popular on the BYOAC 100 list..  but in saying that, a lot of younger guys seem to be drawn to the earlier stuff and it great game play rather than just pure eye candy of todays PC games etc..

So what age bracket do you fall into??

Myself - I am 33 and therefore (as far as this poll is concerned) an old fart  ;D

I'm 16 (17 in about a week), and my favourite games include pacman and galaxian. :P Pong is still the best though,

I'm 20, but grew up on all the old classics thanks to dad.  My life wouldn't be complete without Galaga, Frogger, PacMan, et al. :)

Damn- did you have to lump all of us old farts together in the 33+ catagory. :-[

You could have at least made it so that it was 40+ plus. Talk about making a guy feel old.

RSO Andrew: 37 (oh, and I may have to kill myself if I'm the oldest guy here). I just like the arcade games. Never even owned a home console but spent a lot of quarters on machines in the 80's.

Yeah, I'm shocked about the 33+ category as well. I'm 28, and I feel like I got in on the END of the arcade days that would really appeal to the average BYOACer.

Hi
I am 5'8." I like Defender, Galaga, Pina Coldas, and getting caught in the rain.

I'll be 27 on my birthday.

A very similar thread, while not a conventional poll is posted
here

BTW, this is better suited in the "everything else" forum.

Yeah, what is with the !@*#)!*  33+ category!!!!  I'm 36 and am pissed I missed the under 33 cut-off.   I would actually expect most people to right around my age 35-40.  I was a teenager during the arcade revolution, 1980-1985.  Not that arcades aren't still popular, but there was a big BOOM in the early 80's, right when I was at the "perfect" age (12-17 years old).

:) Rotate or die! :)

Oh geez, now the senior citizens are getting all up in arms over being old.  Would somebody get them their medications please?  Or at least tell them it's almost time for Bingo so they'll calm down?  Maybe put on some Matlock?

dang, i'm the only one under 14. i'm 12 right now, but in about 1 month i'll be 13. two of my favorites are pacman and joust, and i think that more arcades in the malls should have these games. i also think that if the younger generation played more games like this america wouldn't have so many criminals. but, just my opinion.

I'll be 35 in November. I agree with the statements so far that the 33+ category will not give enough info! My 2 cents on how the categories should be are:

20 & under
21-25
26-30
31-35
36-50
41 & over
MAME me!

I'm 25, so i'm in one of the minorities.  I've been playing games so long I've forgotten half of the games I played as a kid.  I started playing when I was like 3 or 4, and the first games I ever played were arcade games.  There was a bowling alley in the area that had ALL the classics.  Asteroids, Pong, Ms. Pacman, Centipede, Joust, Mario Bros., Donkey Kong, Time Pilot, 1942, Asteroids, and Pole Psition.  They had all that, a pool table and an air hockey table in one room.  I was in heaven every day that my parents had to bowl!!!
The default personal text is is "I'm a llama!"???  I guess that makes me an emperor with a new a groove.

I won't be 25 for another 6 months and I Dig Dug is one of my favorites.  Of course, I was always drawn to the older games when I played at the arcade (Galaga is my all-time favorite game and it keeps getting better with age).   ;D

I am 20 and Dig Dug is awesome, I played alot in the arcade because my parents would not let me have a home console until Nintendo 64 came out.  I love all video games and since mame is a single program that is free and capable of tons of games im like a moth to the flame.

Off thread question but has anyone played every game in MAME?

I'm 35.  I always thought the average age around here was thirty something (no references to the old TV show intended).  I was a teen during those "Glory Days of the Arcade" in the early 80's.  I assumed that most people that are "Nastalgic Retro Arcade Buffs", would have been teens during that time also.  I guess I was wrong.  Perhaps I should have know as my kids are hooked on "Bubble Bobble".  But then again they also like a lot of the latest games too.

I'll be 38 in October. But I have a 22 year old wife so it evens out. ;)

I'm suprised as well, I thought we would have more users here around my age. I graduated in 1984 so I was in my prime during the hey days of the arcades. :)

Probably one of the youngest at 15. The classics are all mostly my favorites. Star Wars and Donkey Kong have to be my 2 favorite arcade games ever. The only arcade near me had a street fighter and some classics. So I grew up with these games. (and commander keen)
