Starting my cab!!
« on: June 08, 2004, 11:26:50 am »
Going out tonight and buying three sheets of 3/4" 4'x8' MDF.

My friend at work doesn't play games but he love a good project and hopes to have all the cuts done by this weekend.

Wish me luck!

I plan on posting a website of my progress.

Sooooooo, give us some specs. What kind of cab are you doing? Are you following anyone's plans? What kind of theme are you thinking of? What kind of controls are you going to have? ....

Well, here is what I have now:

AMD 1 Ghz
15G HD
17" Monitor
SB AWE 32 Sound
Creative GeForce256 ( CT6960 )  32 MB
No RAM yet.
NetGear 10/100

And that's about it.

I know the 17" is small but it's all I have for now...
I may upgrade the graphics card...what do you guys think?

Most of the games I play are the classics (Donkey Kong, Galaga, etc) and a few "newer" ones like TMNT, D&D, Mortal Kombat

Closest thing to a theme will probably be the marquee.

The wife and I both agree we don't want to promote any one game because I don't want someone saying "Cool!  You have Dig Dug!"  Yeah, and about 1000 other games...lol

The exception to this will maybe be Metroid (I know..NES).  I plan on putting my NES emulator on there too and I might put some NES characters and maybe some arcade characters on the CP.

Going to be semi-gloss black

Oh, and I am going to do the upright from the book.

The CP will contain these at least:

Two player (8-way) with 7 buttons each.
Trackball
spinner
one 4-way Galaga/Ms PacMan replacement stick
two buttons for the 4-way stick

Also. I am thinking about making the CP removable for different games?  What do you guys think about that?

No me gusta. I really don't like the whole removable CP idea. Just my .02

Cream cheese meeks.  You've done more than me already and I've been at this for a year (I did finally cut my sides though).  For example: I have no idea what joysticks I'm using yet - just a general idea (definately something with microswitches).

I'm doing removable control panels too.  But with the LuSid cab (the one I assume you're building since you're using the one from the book) you almost have to have the whole box removable unless you have wide doorways or intend on building it where it will remain (and don't want to ever move it).

As for the monitor, yeah 17" will be really small for a Lusid cab... it can always be replace though (a 27" TV with S-Video isn't a bad choice at all - and composite component only sweetens the deal).

You definately are fine with the graphics card - no need to upgrade (especially with just the emulator games).  The only time you may to do something different is if you need TV-OUT or want to play brand new PC games.

Good luck.

EDIT: Mixed up composite and component again.

I think you mean "component" here.  S-video is cleaner than composite, which looks like a single RCA plug, generally yellow.

Luckily for us Brits, our TVs have RGB inputs, so an old 26" TV with RGB in would run me about

I dunno if anyones answered your video card question but it wont matter what card you use as far as framerates go. What you need is a card that displays all the weird and wonderful resolutions that the original games ran in.
The Arcade VGA from ultimarc works well and has software that'll set every game resolution as close as possible to the original.  I'd also recommend getting a video amp while you're at it. It up's the output voltage of your graphics card giving a massive contrast boost. I don't work for Ultimarc...just very impressed.
