How are these 19" NeoTec monitors?
« on: June 03, 2004, 11:03:31 pm »
I just won this 19" NeoTec monitor on eBay. It was kind of a spur of the moment purchase.
I can't find any details about it on www.neotecgraphic.com but from what the description says I'm thinking its the same as this one from the Happ website. Does anyone know anything about these?

I'll probably be throwing it into an empty cocktail cabinet I have, all going well.

Hmmm.... the seller doesn't say whether this is a CGA, EGA, or VGA resolution monitor. Neo-tec makes them in all three formats.

I bought two of these monitors JoyMonkey. I didnt gather much from the ebay seller and he wasnt knowledgeable about them ,I was hoping on a sweet deal so I went ahead and bought both of the ones that were available at the time. I ended up paying $65 bucks for each shipped to me in the end.

So I get the monitors and I remove them from the packaging and the first thing I see is the vga cable dangling from the chassis. Second thing i notice before i even set it down was the power cord dangling next to it. The chassis and componets look very clean and the screen itself is clean with no burn. I didnt know how to proceed until I got some info on what i was looking at, so I started off by calling the Neotec sales & parts department to find out about these monitors. I wanted to know if they were in fact VGA monitors and they wouldnt require an isolation transformer.

I talk to the tech, very nice man. I tell him the model # i wanted info on and he was takes a pause to think and then says "oh yeah the NT-948, those will do 800X600. I then ask if there is an isolation transformer required and he stated no it is not.

So with this new info I had no problem to finally begin testing this thing. Long story short i connect my system to the vga cable and plug it in and I get nothing on monitor #1. There is a red led indicator and a faint whining sound coming from the chassis.

Neotec NT-948

Here is the red Led, what a nice picture.

So here I am about to test Monitor #2 and was hoping for a winner here, that thought was shattered after I took a closer look at the chassis and saw this busted ass cap and another one on the flyback.

Also it did not have a power cord but instead was a loose wire bundle with a molex connector.

Also this one has some writing on the tube stating it was restored in 12-02.

Id like to repair em so I have to learn about testing these chassis for bad components and get my hands dirty. Otherwise Id have to take the loss and sell em as parts and I would be kicking myself in the chunk very swiftly if that happens. So good luck on yours, I hope yours is in working order and if not than I hope you are able to work it out. Let me know after you see it first hand if you have any ideas on what I should double check on mine.

Replace those blown out capacitors and that monitor should power up. This model appears to be from some gambling machines.

Hiya Ken

Yes sir, im going to set some time aside on the weekend and dissasemble everything and remove the chassis and inspect for anymore fauly parts and try my luck at it.

One thing i did notice is on Monitor #1 there wasnt a forward ground running to ground point shared on the vga cable like in this picture of Monitor B.

Then there is the matter of this clip-on ground thingy hanging on the metal cage surrounding the flyback, it leads to the strand wiring surrounding the tube like I have on Monitor B. Monitor A doesnt have this, so im going to replace that also.

I will probably need more help down the road so Ill update this thread with Joymonkeys permission our ill create a new thread when I hit that wall. Thanks for the encouragement Ken. :)

Thanks for the repy SaiNRuB! You might as well use this thread seeing as you've already got all the photos and everything here.
I went through several different emotions while reading your fisrt reply; vga cable joy  but everything else pretty much dissappointment  :(
Fingers crossed mine won't need too much work, but I'm sure I'm not that lucky.

I got mine for about $50.00 including shipping from the same guy. It was made in 2002. It had a touch screen on it at one point in time.  It did not work when I got it and I could not find a cap kit for it so I took it down to my local tv repair place.  (They charge to much) They replaced some caps, I dont know what ones. But now it works great as long as i dont turn up the screen pot on the high voltage unit to high.  If i do it turns one and off then on then off about 20 times a minute. all in i'm under $150.00 and it is a nice monitor now.

I just had my monitor delivered. It's also a Neotec NT-948, complete with VGA cable ;D

Somone scribbled on the box "Bad NT-948 - Wavy Picture".
So it sounds like this thing "kind of" worked. It was packed pretty badly though, hopefully there's no more damage.  The screen itself has a layer of 'gunk' on the edges; like there was once a touch-screen attached to the front.

I probably won't have time to test it for a couple of days now, I'll report back with whatever bad news I find...

Sounds like WAY more work than you want to do to save a few $.

If you watch the sales and coupon codes, you can pick up brand new shadow-mask style (e.g. not trinitron) 19" computer monitors from places like Staples for as low as $90 after rebate or normally in the $110-$120 range after rebate/coupon.

Seems like these have been used and abused and don't work and have even had to have tubes rejuvinated or something.

Saving money is great, but remember time is money and messing with these things probably isn't worth the effort.
