Old tv - what extra hardware do I need?

If I buy a new television and use my old 20" set as a MAME display, do I need to buy anything else other than a  video card w/ tv out?


Are there any other additional concerns?


The tv is old and only has one coax input.

Most video cards with TV out will put out composite or S-Video.  You'll need a RF Modulator ($20 or so at anywhere that sells consumer electronics, especially gaming consoles).  This will convert the signal from the video card into RF Channel 3 (or 4), and then all you need to do is tune the television to the appropriate channel.

Be aware that the picture won't be as good as if you were able to hook S-Video directly to the television input.

But since the existing TV I have does not have S-Video inputs (only coax), that's not an option unless I manage to snag a new tv, right?

Yup, and one that's used by kids all over america who hook their XBox up to the old family TV.

Don't forget Walmart.  They sell a converter for less than $20 that has the svideo inputs ot the CoAx cable.

They have those TV out cards too for about $50.

Be careful of the APG / ISA slot things.   You have to get the right card for the PC and make sure the BIOS settings on the computer are right.
